Your car would not start if you had the distributor in 180 degrees off. I did that once and all i got was a hell of a backfire!! If you wanna make sure its not the distributor, make sure cylinder #1 is at top dead center and line up the rotor at the #1 post on the cap. Then go from there, it should start up and then just adjust the timing.
