Thanks for any help!! I am working on my father in-laws pick up, 63 GMC 305 V6. Old fuel pump has a slightly crooked arm. The replacement fuel pump from NAPA the arm is straight. Is this a proper replacement??? I have trouble with not getting very much fuel to pump. It will pump barely enough to run and idle but not enough to rev or work. If you have any ideas at all I'd be glad to hear them.

sound like it is not rigth. go back to the parts store with the old one .the thing with gm pumps is a lot of them have the same bolt patens and they will bolt up even if not rigth and the new pump may have not been box rigth .or this has the wrong pump arm on it this will not pump the full shot with a short arm whacked:
As all these pumps are carter pumps for GM cars ( it is what GM used factory and NAPA or other parts stores just buys rebuilt ), there rebuilt pumps, box and pump probably got mixed up. Also because the original pump is also a carter most likely, you could get the # of it and use that to crossrefrence a new 1 at Napa
I have been working with Napa with the carter # but it seems the days of good parts guys are going away fast! Is there any suppliers on the net for getting these parts. Napa says that the carter # cross is the straight arm.

Doubt there are any places on the net. Go to another part store like a Carquest, try them. The Napa your using is using the book listing for the vehicle most likely and not listing to your numbers. The book listing's are sometimes wrong for old vehicles. If they followed the carter part number, you would have the correct 1.Quote:

Don't overlook the old "get rid of the mechanical pump" alternative. If all else fails, an electric pump mounted near the tank, with a filter inline, and a blockoff for the old mounting on the block, will fix the problem. Also, have you checked the rest of the fuel system for problems? Are all of the rubber hoses open and not collapsing somewhere - sometimes the lining inside the hose will separate from the other layers, and collapse and inhibit flow under suction; is the pickup in the tank open and not plugged up; tank clean; no clogged hard lines; filter in the carb clear?? Sometimes it's the little details that can cause you the most agravation.
how did your pump bend not properly installed if so you now maybe need new cam try taking new pump and pump fuel manully does it pump enough fuel if it does cam lobe ground its self flat
The last post on this thread was 8 years ago, I would imagine that he found the problem.
