    Question im stumped

i just put in a rebuilt 327 out of a 67 corvet that has the 289 short crank the one with out the harmonic balancer inset screw. and i get the damned theing to start for a few seconds and then it shoots flames out the carb. i' reset and reset and reset the timing but it does the same thing so i took all the pullies of and set the timing manualy it still does it. could it be a faulty carb or maybe the fuel pump or perhaps im not getting enoph suction or something anyone got any clues please help aprils right around the corner and thats when my local racing strip opens

    Question

Just a thought...Are you sure you are not 180 degrees out?

They will start 180 out and then backfire like the dickens just like you are describing. And if this is the case, don't feel bad...I have never met anyone who has dropped in the distributor dead-on everytime. It is easy to do.

    tried it

yea when i spun it around it didnt even start it just blew flames and the longest i got it to start is 5 seconds and when that happend it acted like the spring was broke because it rapped out to 65 hundred and then shot flames. im not sure why it doesnt work but its beggining to make me mad. could it have any thing to do with my rocker arms being too tight or maybe a bad seal on ly carb
couse i have probably set the timing 20 times and it still is working oh bye the way i wasnt doing it bye my self so i think it was going in right. we tried the thumb thing and we did the screw driver at number five thing and then we went back and did the old crank shaft way so every way the timing could be set we have tried multiple times
maybe im just a fugktard i dont know

Well I'm sure you have already done this, but it never hurts to list out the obvious...

    1. Pull plug #1, stick your finger up to the port and turn over the engine until it sucks vacumm. Then you will be sure you are set at firing #1.

    2. Double check your spark plug wires are not crossed.

    3. Pull the valve covers and recheck your lash on the valves. You certainly could have them too tight or even broke a spring. Once you have set the valves, turn the engine over without the coil hooked up and inspect the valves to make sure they are all opening and closing.

Since you have tried the timing already, I bet DHOTROD & Grump are right about the valves.

Good luck and keep your cool...you will probably laugh about this later. You'll figure it out.

and after all this is done... next thing you might want to check is your timing chain.... you may have not lined up the cam and crank sprokets properly... and that will definately do what you're describing

    thesals:

Exactly where I was heading. It would run, stumble all over it's self until it found that magic second when the valve was open and the plug was firing.

I would say it sounds like a valve/timing issue.
