Dot To Dot

on a 350 chev. motor, you are installing a timing chain, what cylinder is at TDC when the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets are dot to dot ?

Number 1 cylinder is at top dead center.
If the cam dot is on the very top you have number 6 cylinder at top dead cylinder.

TDC= THE POINT AT WHICH THE PISTON REACHES THE TOP OF ITS TRAVEL ON THE COMPRESSION STROKE

hey guys, need some more votes, i know everybody has a opinion about this. lost a bet on it myself. :D

need some votes. i bet its something you all have taken for granted all these years.:D

It would be nice to have a disassembled engine laying around to check, but I only have a foam mock up engine so that's no help.

My guess is #3.

I say that because the way the timing marks are lined up in your post, the crank is one full turn from #1TDC. (Before you flame me here it's been no less than 25 years since my last engine build so I'm not possitive the crank is one turn off, but I think it is.). It takes 2 turns of the crank for all 8 cylinders to hit TDC.
On a Chevy V-8 the fourth cylinder to fire (1 crank rotation from #1TDC) is #3.




So yes, I will say #3 ................ Final answer.

I thought about this for awhile and thought i should come back and clarify when I say TDC I am Referring to "Both valves closed" TDC.

Or maybe sumbudie put one of doz' special grind cams in there & changed the firin' order. HEHEHE

no i put a ford cam in a chev. and screwed it all up.:LOL: :LOL:
