Which shifter? B&M makes a few. I put the Hurst V-Matic III in my '56 wagon. It is the same shifter as the B&M Mega Shifter (only a few dollars cheaper
). It works fairly well and will take a bit of getting used to. Of course I don't drag race the car, it's just a street driver but it will go thru the gears pretty good!
