    falcon gasser

    ok motor guru's i'm rounding up parts for my street gasser . i have a late model roller 302 , a 1965 289 10:1 motor . i've found a tunnel ram and likely run 450's on it . my trans man gave me a 303X cam . car will be a 4 speed with either 3:18's or 4:11's .
my question is i'm thinking about cutting the early heads to up the comp some.
this whole car is about looks and sound. performance is a non issue.
so tech or any other engine fella's weigh in here. i'm a painter not a wrench .....

Are you saying you have a 302 roller motor and then a 289 motor?
If you're asking which block to use, I'd go with the roller motor and the X303, That what my short block is.
If you know the roller block setup with those heads will give you the 10:1, I would not go any higher compression with iron heads.

I did mine to give 9.5 :1 with aluminum heads and I can run regular gas with no problems.

for regular gas you won't be able to run much compression so cutting those heads is not necessary for that--resurface and chamber clean up--------and its pretty easy to change valves over to small block cheyy and screw in stud system----

Is your 289 a 5 or 6 blot bellhousing pattern????

this car is just for fun and will be loud and obnoxious just like me think stupid teenager .

not sure on the e85 . not real popular down here.
this thing is a junk yard dog . a lot like the stuff of my youth. the 4:11 richman gears are new and came with the car. also a ptrack with 3:18 gears. i dont want to get into a rebuild with new pistons and such . budget on this car is next to nothing. up til now i have pulled parts off the shelf and down from the hill. i'm hoping the 289 is a A code been a while since i looked at it .
like i said performance is a non issue. like most of you i only had one car when i was young. over camed , over carbed , too low of a gear but i drove them to work m-f and raced on the weekend. if i wasn't so bullheaded i would use the bbc bracket motor i still have somewhere.

i still have a really good 454 that was in our bracket car . it is the ass beating from my blue oval buds that are helping with it if i put the chevy in it
i appreciate any and all info. i'm dumb as a river rock on engines. i'm pretty good at tuning but other than that it's what color do you want it . if i had my way it would bounce the front tires setting at idle.

Not sure about the following facts, but when I rebuilt my 289 block in high school had issues with the stroke which turned out to be a 302.

Shine, I admire your honesty as I'm so like you, I can change plugs, oil and air cleaner but anything else, I leave to the experts. Ask me how to panel bash a fender back into shape I can help but the internals of the combustion engine I enjoy reading about and studying what and how it is done but lack the confidence to actually do.
I maybe a little crazy but it stops me going insane.

The 289 in the 66 Mustang I gave my grandson is about 9:1. It was built in 79 and I knew the gas of the future was going to suck and that's why I chose 9:1. About 10 years ago I stuck, if memory serves me right, a Comp's 286H hydraulic flat tappet cam that gives it a fairly wicked idle and a PITA to drive on the street as my grandson found out when he drove it to Cherry Point, NC a couple of months ago. A year or so ago I found an Offy 360º intake and a Holley 650DP and it's very loud and obnoxious with the headers open and my grandson loves it and I guess that's all that counts.

the C code is 9.3:1 comp. not what i was hoping but it will do i guess. the 303X will make it lumpy. not sure on the gt40 heads. i would think low comp . price is right so i will live with it. maybe i will stumble onto so more goodies down the road . if not i could always throw the bbc in it.

If you're curious what it would sound like, I can try and video mine and send it to you.

The GT40 heads are about the best "stock" breathing heads made for the small Windsor motor.
