Chevy 350 Head Question

A buddy bought a '68 Camaro that's been built but needs body & paint to be finished into a nice car. He's got 1088113 heads on the engine, which seems to be pretty healthy from a seat of the pants perspective, and he asked me what I could tell him from the numbers. One site says '86-92 350 heads, 58cc, 1.94/1.50valves, Corvette aluminum heads; and another says '88 and up, same volume & valves, Corvette Angle Plug Aluminum. Any words of wisdom anyone can offer about the heads/engine. Not sure what else I can tell him....;)

You left out a zero in the part number, should be 10088113, commonly known as 113 heads. Here's the skinny from Mortec....
10088113...88-up...350.......... L98 Aluminum, 58cc, angle plug, raised "D" port exhaust, 1.94"/1.5" valves. Excellent exhaust ports. Other than that, nothing to write home about. Flows 190/171 @0.500" valve lift @28" water. Some double hump iron production heads flow better than this head. 163cc intake runners, 58cc exhaust runners.

Thanks, Tech, and sorry about the missing digit. Had it written down, but mis-typed. I've asked the guy if he got the cam card and other details of the engine build, but no reply yet.

I recall at one time you referenced a listing of a bunch of sbc heads that had been flow tested by the same person and were able to be compared. If that was true, would you share again? Thanks Ray

After trading a few more messages, the heads I asked about are stock ZZ4 heads, 10088113. In their "Five Stage ZZ4 Build" ( Link - Small-Block Chevy 5 Stage Build - Popular Hot Rodding Magazine ) they changed out the stamped steel rockers for a mix of Comp Cams rollers (1.52 exhaust, 1.6 intake) and pushrods, then started in with intake, various cams, and finally in Stage 4 they tossed the stock aluminum heads in favor of a pair of RHS cast-iron Pro Action heads,
64cc chamber, 180cc runner PN 12318-05. While I'm sure they flow better, I really have a hard time swapping from aluminum heads to cast iron. Wouldn't it be better to swap to a pair of aluminum heads with the larger 2.02/1.6 valves and improved flow as opposed to cast iron? Stepping back to iron heads for the street seems like a step backwards to me.

Probably so Roger--I think it was those alum heads that back in the 90s for non LT type stuff(reverse coolant flow) that we put 2.02 and 1.6 valves in with just some touch up around the seat area in the ports-ran extremely well on the TP manifolds-I don't remember if they had different manifold angles but seem to remember that the bolts were at a different angle and maybe a couple were not used

Me too Roger. The best value I have seen for the money (under $1100 fully assembled, ready to bolt on) is the 23 degree Pro-Filer. I might choose 185cc intake runners for a 355 motor and 195cc runners for a 383. It's easy to make 500/500 with a 383 using Pro-Filer 195 heads. Shoot for somewhere between 10.0:1 and 10.5:1 with a 0.035" to 0.045" squish/quench.
