    Ford 7.3 turbo's

     



    Got me a project van for building my new Toter, (I'll get some picks for it when I get it home) and wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a good Turbo setup for it? Been looking at Bank's stuff, wondering if there might be a company putting out the same product where I wouldn't be paying so much for the "big name"??????


    PS--When you see the pics, you'll think I've completely lost it this time!!!!!!!

    Why not just use the 7.3 with its setup??? 99-20? Mine has over 500 000 miles on it, lots of them pulling trip axle 44 ft featherlite---------

    I'd love to Jerry, but this one doesn't have the turbo on it!!!!! Think it'd be ok to buy one out of the salvage yard off a factory Turbo truck?????

    do you mean that its an early 73 before turbos?? my 95 was turbod, the 99 is also intercooled --------If you are going to add a turbo to a non t urbo engine---pcm, plumbing etc

    Yup, it's the older one---but it's a new engine from Ford, less then 5,000 miles on it!!!! Dang near stole the van, so I'm thinking I could find a good donor in the salvage yard and get all the turbo pieces off of it????? Or, maybe get hold of Ryan (used to be on here often) down in Iowa, he and his brother do some very nice turbo and diesel work.----He's the one who has the Vette with the Cummins diesel in it.....

    Just checking out some options now, it's got plenty of power, but I want to be able to haul my trailer (32 foot enclosed) with the car, tools, and my (alleged) crew and all that extra torque the Turbo makes would sure move it down the road nice!!!!!

    Well, my hi-dollar toter went with my old trailer when I sold it. Now I have my new trailer and nothing to pull it with but a standard cab pickup, not a good way too travel!!!!! I've been wanting to build something for a toter that 4 or 5 guys with their gear could ride comfortably in while pulling the trailer----This deal came along at the right price and I had to jump on it!

    These old IDI or in-direct injected diesels are real work horses! The 7.3 ones were in late 87-early 94 ford and international trucks. In 92.5 ford added a turbo to the IDI. These engines also had ceramic pistons and were prone to failure. In 94.5 up Navistar introduced the Powerstroke which is direct injected and has a turbo.

    Hypermax, ATS, and Banks used to make turbo kits for these trucks. I think Banks is the only one still offering the kits. A good place to buy one is a used one off ebay, craigslist or where ever. Rebuild the turbo if needed and put it on. I wouldn't use a turbo from a powerstroke. It won't be an easy install and you don't want to put more than 7-8psi through these engines or you will knock out the wrist pins. Been there done that.
