I know the good one is the 2.5 iron duke....ted
Keep water and oil in them and they will run forever. All we ever did was put head gasket on them or, heads when would run them out of coolant.
See I copied this from a Ebay listing and was wondering if thr engine part is true or common with the 2.2's.

994 Chevy S10 with blown engine. We got this truck from a lady in our church so that we could fix it for her. We found that the timing chain had broken and damaged the oil pan. We repaired the oil pan, put on a new timing chain, new clutch and new starter all to find out that the engine had no compression. Our intent was to fix it up for her and give it back since she lives on social security. Once we found the engine had no compression, we weren't able to muster the cash to replace it. She has decided to sell the truck for parts. After research on the internet, I found that a problem exists with these Isuzu gas engines that they blow the compression rings if the timing chain goes. Apparently the engine backfires and blows the rings if the timing chain gets loose and jumps teeth. Anyway, there are a lot of good parts on the truck and we are going to give the lady who owns the truck all of the proceeds from this sale. I know I put about $400 in parts on this truck before we determined that it needed the new engine. Body is not the best, tailgate is damaged and doors show damage. Clear coat on top is peeling. Interior is in pretty good shape except for a tear on the drivers side seat (seats are cloth). As I mentioned, it has a new clutch, timing chain and starter that have never been used but are installed. As far as I know there is nothing wrong with the 5 speed transmission. Good project for anyone who has an engine that will fit or someone whoe needs a truck for parts. Tires are not in good shape. Sold as-is, where is. If you are not local, you will need to arrange transportation on your own.
Maybe Pat or Jerry has worked on these??.
never heard of it, but if the timing chain jumps and advances the timing, it can be hard on an engine.
Ive got one in a 97 sunfire 390,000 kms on it still going common engine problem that i have seen is the headgasket leaks/weeps, like sg4356 says keep them full of water and oil and they will go a long ways, probably not a far in a s-10 as they have to work harder but thinks they are pretty good.
chain jumps it bends valves . i had a new s10 in 86? had the isuzu in the truck .at that time in my life i was very hard on things never did one thing to the engine ran like a top i beat the hell out of it ... my sister ended up with the truck . i hanged all new metal on it as it was geting rusty and she drove the wheels off it .never did any engine work on it .not big on power but a good small truck she traded it in when it burt a valve
I'm looking at S10's because I have to replace my Daily driver/shop truck and I have owned two of them before,but none with the 2.2 engine.I am finding tons of them with 2.2 engines in them.Although the gas mileage is temping,I doubt they would have the power to tow my trailers the rare times I am having work done on them.What I am looking for is a RWD 4.3 and I am thinking because the S10's are that much lighter than Astro vans I should see a increase in gas mileage over the Astro vans and a S10 engine would be much easier to work on.

I found the following.Really small percentages,but a common problem.
HEAD DAMAGE
The aluminum heads for the 2.2L engine hold up pretty good, but about 10% to 15% will need to be pinned or welded because of cracks between the seats.
Another 5% will have severe erosion in the chambers that was caused by detonation. This damage can’t be repaired because the structure of the metal has been altered by the excessive combustion temperatures.
Even if I am not going to end up with a 2.2,maybe in a search here someone will find the above useful.
Gary why not consider swapping the 2.2L for the 2.4L 16 valve engine. These perform very well in later Sunfires and large G5's and G6's. Find a wrecked one and swap over the electronics. I believe the trans bolt pattern is the same. (double check though)
