460 Ford has odd bearing wear. Pat or Jerry?

My 460, upon inspecting the mains, I found there all wiped to the bronze, but there not scored or spun and the crank appears unharmed. Rod bearings look better but still in need of replacement, only damage to the rod journals is there just very lightly scratched in 1 ring, that I can get a slight fingernail catch on.. What are the oem sizes for the rod and main journals? This engine may have been rebuilt. it for certin has an aftermarket timing chain, had a Melling M84BHV and a chrome oil pan.. I want to get this running good cheap if I can, but if I have to rebuild, I would like to gain compression, or a stroker kit if I could fit that in the budget. This is just a '75 Lincoln 460 with stock D3 heads..

I it was a rebuild, could it have been fired up with no assembly lube and no oil pump priming?

Matt - the first thing to dispose of is that HV oil pump. If you have good clearances, the standard one works just fine and the oil stays where it's needed instead of in the heads and valley. Been a long while since I had a 460 apart so have forgotten how good/bad the drain back is, but Ford, IMHO, didn't do a good job on other engine size heads and valleys.

Now, if Pat or Jerry would chime in

some of us SOBs had to work today......the older 429/460 have ok drain back block is fine heads are a bit choke off oil flow. for STD size on rod s is 2.4992/2.5000 main 29994 /.30002 crank needs to be checked for size then a polish may be all it needs. why did it take it to the copper is hard to say with out me seeing the bearings crank could of been ground bad as to finsh or size or alot of junk. ran dry

The M84BHV has been removed, as well as the chrome front sump pan. I have the FRPP fox body 460 swap pan on it, along with an M84D pump for the rear sump.

Thanks for the reply. I'll check the sizes with a mic and go from there. hopefully a re-bearing is all it needs.
