454 build cam questions
hey, i am currently in the middle of a build and am curious on what cam i can use without having clearance issues. i currently have a 75' 454 2 bolt main bored .030 over with what i believe to be a stock crank turned .020 under both main and rod. i have speed pro .100 domed pistons with ported and polished matching heads dual valve springs and 1.72 ratio roller rockers. i am just curious what cam lift and duration i can run. im running this motor in a 79 chevy 1 ton for offroad use mostly. with the occasional mud drags and what not. any info would be much appreciated as most of my expierience is in john deere diesels

I'd do the Comp Cams Cam Quest deal...it's a free download at Comp Cams. Whatever cam you go with, it's always a good idea to do the valve to piston clearance check with some clay, a feeler gauge, and checking springs....or, Wait till Pat is on here and he can tell you what will work, cuz he's probably built a couple dozen engines just like it!!!!!!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

yep built many of them with out knowing how much been cut off the heads or deck or what size valve s your running its hard to say what will clear so a smaller cam is always a safe bet with a roller cam you can put more lift on them .but if your looking at a flat lifter cam .i would not use one for mud drags or in the pit i built and help in many of engines like this a hyd cam is not my first pick. Rpms can go to the moon valve train needs to be top noch with a hyd cam you can be in valve float EZIrish Diplomacy ..the ability to tell someone to go to Hell ,,So that they will look forward to to the trip
I saw last night on fb about John. The world sure lost a great one. I'm going to miss his humor, advice, and perspective from another portion of the world. Rest in Peace Johnboy.
