I have a shop called Altered Rides in CT building the chassis for my '30 Model A and I'm stuck with a choice of motors. I've had a bunch of small blocks in my past projects, and now I'm looking to do something a bit different. Any suggestions would be great. I have to figure this out so they can mock everything up.
Got a budget in mind?
...and what is the purpose of the car? cruising only? Long trips in mind? Freeway time? Is mileage important? Any drag racing? Car shows?
y block fords with 3 97's and t bird alum. valve covers look cool. flathead cars are getting to be like sbc's everybody's doing them jmho.....ted
Not really budget minded. I know being different usually involves using the old wallet. As far as everything else goes I'm not worried about mileage. The car won't be driving more than 100 miles at a clip. I do plan on showing the car, and if I have to go far I will throw it on the trailer.
How 'bout a Turbo from a Mustang or T-Bird. I had a Mustang equiped with one and was lucky enough to rent a 'Bird from Hertz - nice motor and go they like stink and are as reliable as a Timex watch.
Then there are the 4.6, 5.4 and 6.8 Ford modular motors or even the MoPar hemis or truck V10s.
A '76(?) Cad 500 cid or maybe a newer Northstar
Or maybe even a furrin motor like a V8 Toyota or a Porsche 928 V8 tho they have gotten scarce.
The only thing I do have to remind you of and that's leg room especially if you have much engine setback - a problem I'm having at present with seats for my '31 Roadster and that has only a 5.0L Ford tho with a 5" recess
There was a company called "Hot Heads" making new early Hemis. That would be classic hot rod, but not a generic look like the SBC.
The place I have building my car has seats made for chopped and channeled cars, the call them Shitty Seats they said they are very comfortable. But as far as the motors go a I never thought about a porche motor. Aren't Hemis very heavy?
