Is my Caddy a 472 or a 500?

I just picked up a Caddy mill and Im not sure if its a 472 or a 500.. The guy I got it off of pulled it out of a Chevy truck so he had no clue what it came out of... The block casting #s are (from what I can tell) 1486288 and then there was a stamped # again (from what I can tell) 613884, So if someone could please atleast find out what year this anchor is that would be great..

My 425 ran great when my son drove the car home that we got it out of. Nothing really wrong w/them(it's the "baby" Cadillac mtr), other then the smaller valves in the head but I read where all you need to do is swap out the 425 heads for the 472/500 heads to make it breath better.....joe

Im going to be puting it in a 18' flat bottom V-drive boat, so I would like as much TQ as I can get out of the box...

that does not really add up to a good combo.. the 472-500 redlines at approx 4,500 RPM.. in a boat, cruising speed would be at or around 3,500 RPM. you could adjust that to some degree with prop pitches, and with the HP you could run a steeper pitch'd prop, that would cruise at lower RPM's but it's only going to do just so much.. IMO a BB is overkill for 18'

I haven't done this for awhile but..... put a piece of coat hanger in one cylinder hole, when piston is bottomed out. Rotate until piston gets to it's uppermost position. The coathanger, or whatever rod you use, should move
1 1/4" for 500, 1" for 472. Some Cad guy told me that and I have used it successfully when going to look at engines that have already been pulled, and displacement is unknown. Not sure what a 425 would read though.
