Which high performance intake is best for the buck?

Im not talking about your personal preference . Looking to see if any one has dynoed different intakes. I am looking for a intake for set up of my vega. I plan to run a small tire for now and the Strip Dominator is rated at 4500 to 8500. Super Vic is rated at 3500 7500, might be a little better for a small rear tire??I got this from searching on the web. I was going to go with the Super Vic but hell it came in last by this guys research. Is this correct???




The Holley Strip Dominator is a terrific intake manifold and more than holds it own even in todays world. I would have ran one myself if I did not get a deal on my GMPP Phase 6 heads which came with a matching race-ported Vic Jr off a comp eliminator car. A good friend of mine ran a Strip Dominator on the 400s he ran over the years in his 1980 Z and he always had good things to say about it (the car ran 11.20s-.30s range.) There is also a dyno story in the book How to Build big-inch Chevy small Blocks on page 104 where 4 intakes were tested -- the Holley Strip Dominator, Super Vic, Pro Products Hurricane, and GMPP Bow Tie. The Super Vic came dead last:

1- Holley Strip Dominator -- 530 HP
2- PP Hurricane ----------- 527 HP
3- GMPP Bow Tie --------- 520 HP
4- Edelbrock Super Victor -- 519 HP

The dyno engine in question had all intakes peaking at the same RPM, 6600. On some of the other forums I go to which are mostly performance engine tech-oriented, the Super Vic is generally regarded as a good design but needs to be ported properly to get it to work as well as some single plane intakes do out of the box. In some cases the Vic Jr has actually been shown to have a slight performance increase over the Super Vic. I'm not knocking the Super Vic because it is a good intake, its just that there *are* better choices out there for an out of the box single-plane manifold.

If I had to choose a single-plane intake for a new street/strip or strip-only engine combo, the Holley Strip Dominator would be one of the very few at the top of the list.

Depends on a few things... The intake by itself is not the big horsepower maker, but must be selected to match, performance wise, the heads and valve train used and the application of the engine and the car it's installed in..... No one intake is going to be the best for all combinations.... We've used Victors and Super Victors on the BBF's for years.... They come ready for porting IMO, never have seen anyone pull an intake out of the box and run it in a competition type environment and realize the full potential of the intake......
