yes, on most sbc there is a tapped oil pressure hole above the oil filter boss. We use it to run a jumper line to the front of the engine just above the timing cover. helps even out the oil flow.
One other "small" point is that the pump discharge goes to the main then rod bearings first. Either you misunderstood that person, or you may want to be careful about believing what they tell you.
Some gauge manufacturers don't recommend using the port above the filter because it may cause erratic gauge readings due to it's proximity to pressure relief valve in the filter. It's pretty much inconsequential, but since most people don't understand what's going on there they either worry about their engine or get unduly ticked at the gauge.
Big Bob, you're right. I wasn't telling erbssr to use that port as an oil pressure pick up point. small blocks oil from rear to front so, we use that fitting to jump pressured oil to the front.
