long block done FINALLY!
got the long block back monday, thought id say something has about 12:8:1 compression, used head studs this time, .557 single profile cam on a 99 degree lobe center, <long story> other then that the rest of what was in there was salvageable, with the exceptions of the rings, bearings,& oil pump. pistons were fine as were the rods, put arp bolts in the rods had them re-con'd, clearance on the mains and rods is .003 thousandths, strip dominator intake is on the way, took and had the proform carb re-worked lots of crap was wrong with it that i didnt even know about thats all fixed. i was surprised it ran as good as it did when so much was wrong! the heads are awesome, 2.02 1.6 ferrea valves, hardened seats, new guides, postive seal's, 10* degree locks and retainters k motion valve springs good to .560 lift. really curious to see how it'll run this time around!

This will be a SJ 302 ? Thats a mighty big cam for that size engine . Is this for your 1964 Nova ? What rear gear are you running ? I also want to build a 283 for a street engine one day . COOL

I always liked the 327 SJ engines . I am making a 327 LJ out of a 1971 350 block that was sitting around . I have a 307 3.25 stroke crank . And I picked up a set of 11.25 domed pistons on GM HD rods with ARP bolts from my local Craigs list $70.00 bucks . I have a set of full ported 76cc heads 194/150 for this engine . With these heads it should have 9.25CR . And for the cam a Comp Cams Dual Energy CS 275DEH-10 . This is 219in/229ex at 050 and 462/482 lift with 110 lobe separation . This engine is for a street car with a 342 gear so that all the cam it gets .

What year rods are you using in that 283 . The early ones are not very strong on the large end !

I think the 1964 283 rods are the late stronger rods . I now the 1965 283 ones are for sure .

I am to ! I think that is great . And your 302 will run strong . But go easy on the cam . I think 520 lift would work just right .

you should of seen the 327 we had at the track a while back with a .650 solid roller
this cam will work just fine, ill have to dig out the cam card for the specs from the never ending paperwork pile and post them. i of all people know how easy it is to overcam a 283

Thanks guys! It's been a long road. Fun doing finishing work for sure. Getting the dash ready for paint and some interior trim. Have to do some finish work on the aluminum headliner before...
