Broken 305

Hey i'm new here. Nice forum though! My 81 chevy c10 just started to die. My 305 started running real bad and at an idle it makes all sorts of clanking sounds when its warm. I'm thinking a rod bearing or something along those lines. Anyway, I want to rebuild the 305 but don't know that it can be done cost effectively. It looks like I'll have to buy new heads, intake, carb, cam, etc. to get any power out of it. I don't mind more power, thats what I want. I thought about putting 350 heads on it because I can get a pair for cheap, possibly free. Heard thats not the best idea. Other options include buying a used 350 tearing it down and adding a cam, intake, carb or looking into a big block. I know a guy that rebuilds them all the time. Most work I can do myself. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

If that's true, then don't even consider rebuilding the 305. Any garden variety 350 will make more power due not only to cubic inches, but in the way the fuel/air charge gets through the intake valve better without the valve shrouding associated with the small bore of the 305.

If your 305 is as bad as it sounds, go with the 350. I put alot of time and money into my 305 and if I had to do it all over again, I would go with the 350 or maybe 383.

Thats what I thought should be done. I'll keep my eyes open for a 350 thats in good shape. Thanks guys. Anymore suggestions one cheap power would be good!

Sure, a 400 small block has the potential for making more power than a 350 with the same amount of money spent. Check with local police and ask if they have seen any abandoned mid-70's Impalas, Monte Carlos, Caprices, half-ton pickups, station wagons, etc. on their rounds. If you find a car on someone's property, tell them you'll give them a hundred dollar bill and tow it off for them. Pull the 400 out and put all the rest on ebay parts.

Richard's got a great idea. So many are sitting around aggravating the local municipalities here. A lot can be acquired with some "snooping".

since i was 7 or 8 and helped dad rebuild a 13:5-1 327 +.030 331 ive wanted another one. heck yes, 283's and 301's forever will be a staple of mine. besides i said 327 cause its a truck :P

I would get a new basic 350/260hp crate engine. You can add the goodies you like, carb, cam, etc. Since it will be going into a S10, GM will give you a 3 yr 50,000 mile warranty to go with it. Cost for the basic engine about $1500. Goodies extra.

If you can't do new, go get a nice used one and add the goodies to bring up to your specs. But for the money and the warranty, the crate is hard to beat.

and if you know the right people you can get one done for 6-9 hundred bucks!

in my neighborhood here theres a machine shop that sells a 1 year 12k warranty 375HP 350 for $850 +core.... its a pretty nice deal, but i personally dont drive chevy's, i like my cars to run :LOL:

sorry i just had to.... really every engine can be built to be a good engine, it just depends how much money and work you want to put into it...
