what makes condensors go bad?

I put a new condensor in my '51 Chevy to get it started and running, to move it 20' into our other tent garage last fall, shut it down, left if alone until this weekend, hooked up the gas ( soda bottle with hole drilled thru cap, 3/8" line running to the bottom ), hooked up the battery charger. tried to crank it, wouldn't. battery was shot, had almost no charge and was hissing like it was overcharging, so I pull it out, go to TSC for another 6v battery, put it in, engine now cranks, but no fire, tested for spark= nothing, so I called to order a condensor, but my nice auto parts guy, now stocks them for me ( had 1 the last time also ). put it in today, and it fired up with no problems, other than backing it out, the exhaust got hung up, and ripped most of it off ( muffler and a lot of cheap flex pipe ) wondered why it started to get loud and sound kinda nice ( forgotten how cool an old tractor sounds :LOL: ). but, what makes them go bad?? there cheap enough, I don't much care about the cost ( $9.50 ), but it's a pain getting the 8mm wrench ( almost same as 5/16" which I don't have ) down in there to pull the nut to release the wire.

Maybe you didn't turn the key all the way off when you parked it last fall. The battery draining through the distributer will fry the condenser, and kill the battery. Won't do the points any good either.

Continuous current thru it as said earlier will kill it eventually, reversed coil polarity will make it die real quick, along with the points and then, since there are very few made for today's cars, that it makes me suspect poor manufacturing processes with poor insulation layers (outsourced to China, maybe)

What makes a condensor go bad? Maybe bad upbringing. Hung out with the wrong crowd at school....hhhmmmm knows.....LOL....just giving you grief. (I couldn't resist!)

Is this the same women who think the oil light should get brighter if it really needed oil?

Freak her out by changing the turn signal lenses to red and see what happens.

well, after listening to my car again, I'v decided I'm going to put my home made muffler ( just perforated inner tube, i have the parts for it, but havn't assembled it yet, or drilled the oles in the inner tube ) and use 1 of the new Cherry Bomb extreme mufflers ( single " Wing " chamber ) on the Ford. Chevy just sounds too cool the way it is.

maby, idk if the supplier for carquest and Napa are the same or diffrent. most every thing electrical is Standard Motor products, from carquest

Standard - Blue Streak used to be pretty good electrical stuff, not the best but OK.

I'd put in a 6v pertonix ignitor but at $180, $10 condensor and $15 points, are looking pretty good.

But what about changing the lens from green to red....... I'm dieing here. C'mon Denny go for it.

reminds me of the episode of home improvement, where Jill ran the Nomad out of oil...lol

sadly most things such as condensers and points and such have not been outsourced to china, but actually mexico... which tends to make the crappiest electrical components possible....

Denny.....you're still married to her and she's still breathing...LOL....I guess I have more patience to learn.....but it's still funny.

Isn't that the truth. Zenith found out the hard way. Many of you might remember the old Zenith slogan "The Quality Goes In Before The Name Goes On", well the quality went South and the name went in the toilet. :mad:

yup.... mexican made products are just cheap.... even their candy is bad, it has lead content in it..... their food is great though :D

heck we even have horribly built mexican made houses here in california... and so i've been hearing is happening around the rest of the country now too
