    I found a small piece on the net stating that the 383 was the standard engine, with the 318 being a gas mileage option.

    Here is a picture of the 383 in a '66 Polara. You always have to also consider than someone might have swapped engines at some time. The numbers stamped on the motor would be the only way to know for sure.
