I'm looking a this mustang for sale of Ebay and the buyer claims that it has lifter noise when the engine is cold but goes away when it warms up. How big of a problem is this and what is invloved?

IMO, it could be a big problem if the noise does not go away one morning. My truck's lifters leak down and rattle on start up, but they immediately pump up and the sound goes away. Does not require waiting for the motor to warm up. Originally Posted by Damien_63 Originally Posted by Damien_63

Sounds more of a mechanical issue that when warm fills a void and quiets down.

My 5.4 3 valve with variable cam timing was ticking just like a lifter but it never went away. Ford had to replace the parts in cam drive line.

I'd pass on this one, especially with the valvetrain noise. The 4.6L engine is relatively trouble free for well over 100,000 miles of normal use, for a valvetrain noise to show up on a 2002 with less mileage tells me that the car was beat on and run to the redline..............But then again, what would I know about Fords

Bill S.Instead of being part of the problem, be part of a successful solution.

that motor doesn't have lifters so its a different valve train noise... i'd stay away, to rebuild the topend on the 4.6 its costly and very painstaking, theres a million parts in those thingsjust because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day
