my $0.02
It's likely to be a rumor, though it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t any merit.
I also hear tell that Cummins is working with dodge to make a new 4.2L V6 and 5.6L V8 the V8 for 1/2 ton trucks and V6 for the Dakota and Durango.
With what you've heard about ford I can't imagine Chevy is sitting idle. Jeep already has a Mercedes derived V6 CRD to enter in the segment and I can only imagine other foreign manufacturers besides VW with it's V10 Tourage are looking in the same direction.
The old GM 6.2L and 6.5L V8's are a simple swap for a 350 with the only major modification being the fuel, cooling, and exhaust system. I'm not sure about the old fords and new powerstrokes or Duramax engines but the current Cummins 6bt weighs in at about 1000 lbs and would be a tight fit any where, but the lesser known 4bt was offered by Cummins in a re-engine program for Chevy box vans to fleets (mostly Frito-lays) that originally had Chevy v8's. obtaining one of these offers a simple swap for a 350 cuts about 400 lbs off the 6bt's weight, shortened by 2 cylinders and attached to a th400.
Here is a link to a site that revolves around jeeps and the forum doesn’t have a lot of activity, but some searching could yield more links and plenty of crazy diesel drive train concoctions as just about every automotive/light duty diesel engine available in the USA has been touched on at one time or another.

I’m waiting for the day they decide to stop denaturing ethanol at the pump. Can you imagine taking a hit off of a gas pump that is force-feeding you moonshine! One little pull off that & I’d be set for the night! Woohoo
