Crate 350

Old thread I know but was wondering if anyone has had an update on this yet? Maybe one of you guys have bought one recently and got a great deal or such. I looked into the local dealer and they want more than online. I understand the warranty being easier to do through a dealer but hell, either way it will be a pain having to pull it and send it off. I'd rather pull it, crate it up and have freight come get it and send it off and bring it back to my door.
I am still running this same 305 but it's going to be on it's last leg soon. It doesn't have nearly the power it did (maybe the cam is worn pretty badly?) I am using 20w50 oil and it's burning it like crazy and gas milage is horrible. I keep up with it such as oil changes, anti freeze, air filter, etc etc.
I was thinking a crate from an online place and adding a plain 350hp cam like a stock vette cam or such? Just a plain kit. I have a polished manifold (might change, I dont like polished on a daily driver) but might put a Wieand Stealth manifold on it and I have a 650cfm edelbrock carb that will be fine for now. I can switch those two things over but will need headers and dual exhaust as well. I am hoping to do this with about 2500-3000 dollar range TOPS if possible.

BTW, I hear that Apple Chevrolet in PA sells these for a great price and I THOUGHT it was free shipping! The shop I worked at last got their crates from them and it was supposedly a great price and like I said, shipping was free. Maybe I am wrong on the shipping thing, I dont know...

One thing about a new GMPP crate engine is that there is no core needed. Looking back at my books I paid $1970 (I think that was shipped too) for a new 350, it was the 290hp-350 part# 12499529. I paid for it three years ago yesterday. It's still running pretty strong, it would run better if I could ever learn to tune a carb properly.

I have a buddy that works for a parts warehouse and he said he probably could have gotten it for several hundred less. I didn't get an exact quote, as I really didn't want to know how much I could have saved.

The current Jegs catalog has that same engine for $1770.

I got a remanufactured Chevy 350 long block, 2 bolt main, including oil pan and a gasket kit from a local dealer of Motor Works remanufactured engines a few years ago for $950. From what I see you can get them for about $1,119 these days (plus a core- which you have) directly from Motor Works. Comes w/ a 5/50,000 warranty. You may be able to find a local dealer and save shipping. Here is their website w/ a list of 350's if your interested-
