exhaust Y adapter

My '51 Chevy has the stock 235 w/ single exhaust. I was originally going to go with a set of fentons to gain duals, but due to complications and funding, I'm just gonna get a Y adapter and Y it off after the muffler, which will be in the stock location, of just behind the trans X member, midway between the front and rear doors approx. I know Y adapters are made but are they redially available from the local parts store? I know that www.fordsixparts.com sells 1 for $25, this is what makes me wonder. thanks

Go to your local muffler shop. They can make you one to fit exactly as required without any muss or fuss...

Get a U-Bend in the size desired.

Cut it in the U section so that you end up with a narrow and pointed U-Bend when you weld them together.
(About 3" - 5" or so will be removed from the middle of the bend.)

Cut this narrow pointed U-Bend at the top end at the right place so it matches the diameter of your head pipe.
Either weld the head pipe to the U-Bend or weld a short run of pipe there which will make the U-Bend a Y pipe.

Done right it will flow fairly well.

It probably wouldn't cost much if you were to bring the car to a muffler shop after you hang the muffler and have them make up the dual part to the rear from where you leave off. Time you buy pipes cut and hang them. Make some calls see what your optiond are.

That's true, but you want to talk it over with the muffler shop guy beforehand.
I've seen more than a few Mickey Mouse jobs where they plugged the new pipe into the original at a 90 degree angle.
Quick and dirty it was.

More than a few muffler shops will cut offending pieces of your car off with a gas torch if they're in the way.
Been there, done that when a muff shop cut the stock mounts off my pickup just to make running the new pipes quick and easy.

There are a heckuva lot of really good muffler shops out there.
Try to find one and stay away from the butchers....

YEP I have had the same problems here . You just insist on going with the car/truck and if that isn't allowed go to the next shop. We have a few custom shops around here. One, the pipes are guarented 10 yr. They use aluminized steel. I've had the same tail pipes on my truck for about 8 yrs now and changed the mufflers twice.My other truck they cut off every thing to the cat and started over no mufflers thats been on there a long time too.

rather than worrying about flow and having to weld up a U bend, should I just drop the $25 on the pre made Y?
