Has anybody ever seen anybody do anything noticable with one of those old 2.5 4cyl Chevrolet motors. I know there are some people who have stuck the 2.4 QUAD4 motor in rods and there are sites that sell performance parts for them.

Depends on what you mean by "those". The 151 ci Chevy II/153 Iron Duke engines (these are 2.5 though weren't identified that way at the time) of the '60's/'70's were moderately popular in Model A's and Track style Ts in the '70's (in part a reaction to that fuel crunch period). The engine also found considerable popularity with the dirt track crowd who developed a lot of power equipment. It was also available through Merc Marine who designed a through port head that was popular for power seekers.

The Quad 4 was interesting, has some following, but hasn't been a knockout. The one to watch if you're into this sort of thing is the Ecotec found in most smaller GM rigs now. The "tuner" crowd, that isn't blindly Japanese loyal, has really embraced this engine. Supercharged, cammed, and so on, they crank some impressive power. And they can look like an old Offy without much effort.
