im wondering.. i have an all stock internal 283 (bored 60 over) with a 600 holley carb and intake and summit headers backed by a 700r4 tranny and 410 gears... i was wondering if a vortech top end.. heads and intake ... is all swapable... and if so what kinda improvement would it give me... (hp... gas mileage.. tq... anything) i can get this set up cheap and im wondering before i get it... let me know .. thanx
All of that stuff will bolt on, but I'm not sure if the bigger valves of the Vortec heads will clear the small cylinders of the 283. There will also be a small drop in compession ratio which will result in lost power. This can easily be made up for by using flat top pistons or even pistons with a slight dome. The heads have big ports and will let that motor rev high, I'm not sure how they'll perform at lower speeds, but it should be just as good as the factory heads.

Chevy says they will work on the 283. But they were designed for and work best on a 350 CI engine. I don't know what "cheap" is in your book. But I would put the money into the heads you have. Porting, hardened seats and stainless valves will do a lot for you and the motor will retain it's traditional look.
When youe say "set up" I'm hoping you mean heads, valve covers, intake, intake bolts, intake gaskets, head gaskets, rocker arms, and push rods. None of your 283 equivelents will work. And if your cam has any lift at all you need to factor in some machine work. Valve stems need to be cut down, narrowed, and cut for new seals. And the spring pockets will need to be enlarged for the new springs you will have to buy. And then there is the issue of screw in rocker studs.
And, like 76GMC1500, I wounder about valve to cylinder wall clearance.
you can to put vortech heads on a 283. casting number 906 or 062 to retain compression mill them from 64cc down to 58cc and use a 350 style head gasket cause a 283 gasket will overhang the chamber contours.........this is for one a .60 over 283.......scooter
