That's the spark advance that you dial into the motor by turning the distributor clockwise or counter-clockwise with a timing light connected to the #1 spark plug wire. The damper at the crankshaft has a notch indicating top dead center and a series of numbers following the notch to indicate degrees of advance. Line up the notch/numbers with the timing tab which is usually bolted to or is a part of the front timing cover.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.
