Have had not any problems with my Unilite, I will say that the ballast resistor is key to protecting the module. Very cheap insurance.
Also in the fine print you will read that you cannot "jump start" the car, if the battery dies you have to recharge the battery and then start it otherwise you run the risk of blowing the module. I am not sure if the ballast resistor will provide protection during a jump start, but I did not have one installed and left my headlights on one day draining the battery. Jump started the car and then it ran like crap. Took me nearly a month to figure out what happenned, I had blown the module. Good thing is that the module was easy to replace and a lot less expensive than a new distributor.Jim
