V10 vs LS1: Engine sizes

Hey everyone,

Just chucking ideas around as I'm still in the planning stages of my rod.
Most of my thinking (for an engine) has been along the lines of a nice 350, maybe even with a supercharger if I can keep it all under the hood. But then of course there are these ideas that pop into my head, and I have to investigate a bit more.

I was wondering if anyone knew the differences in the dimensions of a 350 chev motor and a V10 viper engine.
This is for my '37 Ford vert, I've seen that the 350 doesn't have any problems fitting and even the larger big blocks can fit.

This is just an idea at the moment, so feel free to call me crazy! Just thought it would be something new.

If anyone has any info or good websites to check out that would be great.

I don't think you'll have room for the V10 without stretching the frame. It's at least a full cylinder (4-plus inches) longer than the Chevy.

Oh well, it didn't hurt to ask. I am still in my planning (dreaming) stages so have had a few grand ideas, this was just one of them.

What if I recessed the firewall and mounted it slightly further back, would there be room width wise?

I don't think the width would be a problem, but do you want to sacrifice the legroom????? Of course, you could always move the pedals, steering wheel and seat to the rear.

I might have to look into this properly then.
Maybe there's a bit of room left at the front I could use, so it wouldn't have to be set back too far.
Might also have to think about the extra weight of the larger engine.

Do you know of any places that deal in these?

I was meaning any places that sell these engines. They might be able to help me out with a few measurements. Then I can share what I come up with.

might want to try your local dodge dealer.... if i remember correctly... the viper v-10 crate motor is $35k

Yep, chassis extended by 6 inches

Geez, $35K!!! That's a bit steep!

Might have to look at a supercharger instead, as long as I can hide it all under the hood.

It doesn't seem too much bigger, the other 4 inches must be for the rest of the running gear to fit.

You mentioned LS1 as your comparison, are you speaking of the Gen III smallblock or the original 350? There are some very trick combinations available for the Gen III and Gen IV (LS2-LS7) motors, including some pretty wild superchargers and turbos. The LS2 crate motor is just a little over $6k and has 400rwhp out of the box. That's one heck of a starting point. Just having the LS1 goes a long ways towards having something different compared to the 350 SBC.

I just got my new Scoggin-Dickey catalog in the mail. They list a Viper V10 motor under part # P5007084 for $12,799.95

Comes complete with engine wiring harness, air cond. compressor, clutch and flywheel, power steering pump, 30 amp alternator and serpentine drive belt.

450 hp / 490 ft-lbs of torque
488 cubic inches
Aluminum block and heads
Twin 64 mm Throttle Bodies
Stainless Steel tubular exhaust manifolds

Pat - I hadn't really looked into all my options, was just going to go with the reliable ol' SBC, but some of those others mentioned have caught my attention too! Going to have to do a bit of searching/reading on those other engines as well.

tech - Thanks for that, the hp isn't much higher than the LS2, maybe it would be a better idea going with an LS2 (or similar), then I could sort out some kind of blower for it too.

You'll have to change the pistons to lower the compression ratio to about 8:1 in order to run a blower.

Using AFR heads, you could build a naturally aspirated 383 that would make more hp and torque than the Viper for half the money.

Magnacharger makes a direct bolt on supercharger for the LSx motors. Believe it or not, with it you do not need to replace your pistons with lower compression ones. Computer controls are amazing. It comes in various levels of performance, some are even emmsions legal. Check them out at www.magnacharger.com. Also surf on over to www.ls1tech.com and do some reading on the message boards there. looks like the viper motor is cheaper than it used to be.... and definately the LS series motors are a nice way to go.... theres a lot of direct bolt on you can do the will increase power quite incredibly.... and its amazing how the computer management systems can compensate for adding a supercharger and keep you from blowing your motor.... going turbo would be kind of interesting though.... it is a little harder on the motor.... but that'd be pretty damn unique, especially if you had the blowoffs and everything.... but then you have to add room for an intercooler and such

Wow, that engine looks awesome. Looks like I have a lot more reading to do as well.

If anyone has any more links to interesting reading it would be great. It's always good to read actual experiences instead of listening to sales pitches!
