Ford 460ci build-up

i just bought a ford 460 that came out of a 83' ford pick-up and i plan on building the shit outta it and dropping it in something kinda light like a mustang, fairlane, or a galaxy or something along those lines. im going to go with a large cam, roller rockers, high compression (like 12:1), stroke it, and bore it out a good .030 over. i wanna punch it out to over 500ci and i know the bore and the strokeing will do that no problem. i just wanted to know any recommendations about specs of my soon to be internal parts from someone whos done this before. also i wanted to know if theres a duel quad tunnel ram intake for the 460. any advice would be rad. thanks.

thanks for the help man. ill start gettin everything planned out on paper to see what im gonna be looking at price and parts wise soon. then ill take it around to a few engine builders to see if they agree then ill go and start my build-up when i get back from iraq in 12-18 months from the november time frame. so ill be saving money up no problem. also what would i be looking at price wise for this kind of a build-up? thanks again for all the help, its much appreciated.

There is an intake for you on Ebay, Just search for "Ford 460" and browse. There is alot of good deals on there, and you will be able to find that stroker kit in there for sure, up to 577ci. There are tunnel rams in there off and on, you have to check it daily, things come and go there quickly. I have bought most all of my parts there, saved a ton over Jegs and Summit. Most all things are name brand, new in box. Look for the guys from Mad Dog Racing. They hooked me up BIG. Good Luck

i know that im gonna get bent over and ass raped w/o lube and the curtiousy of a reach around when i start my build-up. but i dont mind that's y im gonna spend the better part of a year to build my engine so i can get all the good stuff that i want and take my time to build it right. this WILL be one bad mamma jamma when im done with it. i want to have at least 600 hp at the rear wheels when its all said and done. honestly what do you guys think ill be puttin out at the rear wheels with all this crap that im dropping in my motor??

If money is not the issue, then just get your 514 from Ford. Part #M6007-D514, 625 HP and 600 ft lbs torque. Retail is $7595.00.

well money is an issue to an extent. i only make 5 something every 2 weeks. army pay is little to none. besides...what fun is buying a crate motor? any jackass can buy a crate motor. its all about finding a complete heap and makeing it work. after i get this motor together for the most part then im gonna go pull a p.o.s. outta the junk yard and get that together. nothing fancy. its all about no frills racing.

stock 460's have two major problems, most stock heads have the air pump bumps in the exhaust ports that need to be ground out and then plug the holes in the back of the head where the air tubes fastened. The stock timing chains stretch go to a good drive or double roller. degree the cam, the factory retarded the cam to meet smog laws retired ford engineer

Specify a timing set from a '68 to '71 429 when you go to buy it. They aren't retarded like the later sets.

how much would it cost to take it to a machine shop to have the block hot tanked and have it bored .030 over and get all the fixins done to it?

When I was getting ready to have my motor built, we sent the original 460 block to a local shop. They pressure checked the block and sure enough, it was cracked. So was the next donor block bought from a boneyard. We took that one back and got another from them.

This one was okay. It was bead-blasted, hot tanked, milled, and bored out to 0.60 over, for I think 175 bucks, it might have been more. We used a double-roller timing chain, ported and polished the original 71 heads(this took a long time), put Keith Black pistons in, install a bigger cam, a new water pump, a new radiator, a set of real roller rockers from MadDog racing, a Weiand Stealth manifold(but it sits way too high for me), a Pertronix II electronic ignition kit, and a polished 800cfm Edelbrock EPS carb.

I just got the car back from the muffler shop after having dual exhaust put on, I couldn't hack the factory single exhaust. Sounds so nice now, a real deep thobbing pulse when idling. My huge, heavy-ass Lincoln seems to run fine and has alot more power than it did before the rebuild... but a stroker would be SWEET!

if you are planning on the Kaase heads i would hold the horse up just a little bit because he is as we speak developing a new set that are suposed to leave the old ones in the dust right now they are refered to as p51 heads like i said they are in the developement stage but i know if i were allowed to use them i would wait

sweet ride man. im only boreing mine .030 over cuz keepin it runnin cool will be an issue. and the closer u are to ur water ports the hotter it runs. so .030 over should be more than adequite. plus im gonna try an run 12:1 compression and have a 577 stroker kit put in it. so lack of power will not be an issue.



and sappy, im gonna check those heads out that ur talkin about. appreciate the info man. do u know if the new heads will be able to handle all that power that i plan on puttin out?

I was worried about the possible overheating issue myself, but after talking to seasoned engine rebuilders they assured me that the 460 can handle it with ease. I haven't had even a bit of extra heat, even with the weight of my Lincoln. The motor guys said that thin cylinder walls might be a problem on other types of motors, but not the 460. Of course, this is just an opinion.

this is some good reading on the upcoming heads i would think that if a man can make 700 hp on a set of cast heads you should easily make the numbers with these they are a step up from the tfs streets and a step down from the tfs a cactings but with the right "smoothing they can be made to flow more than the stock tfs a so with that in mind i think kasse has himself a winner

I just finished a project where we dropped a 460 into a 87 McLaren. If you are going with a fox body care you need to improve air flow through the radiator. I had a fit trying t0 figure out why it over heated so quickly. We eventually add a makeshift skirt under the car to direct the air better and she runs nice and cool now. Would also recommand using the Cobra Grill insert.

right now im not exactly sure on what im gonna drop the 460 in after its all said and done. im keepin my eye on my moms 68' stang. this is gonna be a long project because its gonna be expensive as all get up, plus im gonna be moveing around alot for a while. but i have something in mind for the 460, liiike a 557ci stroker kit plus many many extras. im gonna try to pump as much HP through this motor as humanly possible:whacked: (running on pump gas and naturally asperated of course).

Your looking at about $500 for a good machine job but i strongly urge you to take it to a speedshop not a autopart machine shop for the machine work

would it be a bad idea to get a 557 stroker kit for my 460, put a good sized cam in it, semi-radical heads, and a few other go fast parts?:D
