Set the timing and prime the carb before you turn the key. The new cam ain't gonna tolerate a whole lot of grindin' on the starter without some splash lube from the crank. Bring the rpm's up to about 2,500 for about 20 minutes, while monitoring oil pressure and water temp. I also use a bottle of GM Engine Oil Supplement in the oil. Get it at any GM dealer at the parts counter. It contains molybdenum disulfide, an extreme pressure lubricant that your cam lobes will like. After 20 minutes, shut it down and change the oil and filter and add another bottle of Supplement. Change oil and filter again at 300 miles. No further oil additives should be necessary. That's how I do it, others' methods will vary.
All good things, all I would ad is manually pre lube, haave a window fan handy in case u get nervous about the temp and keep a close ear for death rattles.
cam breakin is very inportant and manual prime is a must on all my builds, and you need to rotate the motor at least two times, i whant oil pressure every where that it needs to be when it fires up!! double check every thing- rotor and cap location- carb and lines full of fuel, a full 12 volts to coil, you whant it to fire up as quickly as possable!!
savor the smell of fresh paint buring off the engine  . it the best smell in the world
Thanks Ives and chevy, I forgot to include the part about priming.
that will help me a lot, thanks you guys
which oil is better to use for startup/breakin? conventional or synthetic?
i would go with conventional, try to get them rings seated.
how much oil pressure should i expect to see?
My trick to avoid cam break-in. Yep. Roller Cam.
