500 horse 500 foot pound torque 327?

Hey, i am a new member and i am planning on building a 327 over the next year or so. I was wondering what kind of work i would have to do to build it street legal, and with about 500 pound foot torque. i want to do this with a 327 because it is stock for the 66 el camino, and i would perfer not to have to build a 396 to get the 500/500 power. If any one knows specifics on how to do this, and could possibly give me an idea on what different parts i would need to do this would be greatly appreciated. and if there is no way to build a street legal 327 with this kind of power then i am curious what kind of power i could expect. thanks.

Chevy made a 327 with 375 HP. I suppose you could get 500 hp and 500 lbs-ft. Got about $20 grand?

13:1 Compression
Racing fuel

Some of these guys did it - although most were 350 CID.

I was thinking along those lines. The short stroke 327 is gonna have to spin upwards of 7800 to make those numbers and the torque curve is gonna be real peaky.

Be a neat motor though.

Lets see, New member, Welcome to the club. We are glad to have You here and look forward to talking to You in the future. The el camino sounds like a nice ride.

Now ! Wake up, This dream is nice but not too realistic . A 327--350hp makes a real nice street motor that You can enjoy.
The most advertized torque that a 327 ever had was 360@3600 rpm. That was with 11 to 1 compression and good gas.

You would enjoy the 350 or so hp. in your el camino on the street. Anything more you will pay the price in more ways than one.

Just my opinion, not worth to much, Its your money, Your truck, do as you wish. Good Luck and Again WELCOME!

I agree with 'Horse and Henry, 500 hp small blocks are very expensive and would not be very streetable. A small block with 500 horse a a very peaky torque band would need a 5 speed with tall rear end gears and 7500 RPM shifts to make it pull decent. Not real practical in a street application. But hey, it's your car!!

Hey, i made a post yesterday about this and today i can't find it so i'll post again. i am wanting to build a 327 for a 66 el camino but i can't find the info i need to buld it with the power i want. I want it to push about 500 horse with 500 pound foot torque. If this isn't possible PEASE tell me, but if you do know how this could be possible and the car still be street legal i would really like some help. this will be my first engine build so i will probably have a lot of question over the next few months. thanks for all the help.

i can tell you what most people said yesterday. to do this would cost to much and wouldnt make a good street motor. i agree :HMMM:

IF you could build a "street" 327 with 500 ponies for XX dollars, why wouldnt you build a "street" 383 with 500++ ponies for the same XX dollars? Block prep costs the same, cranks cost about the same, pistons the same, heads the same, etc, etc.

IF you arent building for some class rule that limits cubic inches, why not go big? Especially since getting 500 horsepower will require non-stock components.

street legal shouldnt be the question. The question should be streetable. I would say 500 streetable HP from a 327 would be pretty tough normally aspirated.
But than, whats the definition of streetable ? are we talkin something to just do a little local cruising between valve spring changes , or something that you can take just about anywhere reliably ? or something somewhere in between ?

build a solid bottom end and go for the 350 hp and drive every day. if 500hp is the goal just hook up a 150 shot of juice to wake it up

It takes a real good suspension, good brakes ,good tires and wheels,headers and good exhaust,good transmission,good converter, good rear end,good cooling,good distributor ,good wiring ,good heads, goodcam,good valves,good intake and carburator ,etc.etc.etc. How much of this do you have now???

This is doable Mo, if you have the money I'll help you with your combo- but first your going to need some special tools for this.
You'll need a small grinder simular to - but NOT a dremel- that has a top speed of 13,000 rpm, a degree wheel & dial indicator, a set of gram scales (ditgital), a full set of mikes. These are just enough to get you started, after you have these and 500 dollars extra in cash for the machine shop, let me know & we'll procede.

first, i would like to thank you for all the replies. I have thought about it some more and i think it would much easier to build a 500/500 396. I could do this and still be happy because i could build it as an SS el camino instead of just a regular 66 elkie. But that still leaves me with the problem of this being my first engine build and as far as parts i already have the answer would be none. I am right now looking for a type of parts list or a list of different choices that could effectivlely and safely (or as safe as you can be with 500 horses) give me a 500/500 engine. Right now i have no engine of any sort, and i have no el camino. I am just looking for a way to make a list of the parts and specific items i will need so i will know what to save for and what will will be compatable with what so on and so forth. I may in the future try to build a 500/500 327 but as for right now with what little knowledge i have i will stick with the 396. Oh, and about the 383 i would like to stay away from one because i know about 4 guys around where i live that have one and i would like to have something that no one else around my area has.

Big block parts are $$$$$$. Why not a .030 400 small block (406) or a 427 small block stroker kit? Still cheaper than a big block and 180 lbs. less weight up front.

Just a thought.

2. Say "Hello, my name is _______"
3. Say "I want to buy a 510 HP 502 engine"
4. Say "my Visa number is xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx

The nice truck driver brings you a really nice engine. All you have to do is to install it. That way, you have a new engine that is of a known output.....and you can spend your time working on the rest of the car. It's hard to beat a GM crate motor......and your friends WILL be envious and it WILL put out serious power.

I would like to stay stock which means either a 327 or 396. Unless there was another stock engine put into a 66/67 el camino that i don't know about. About ordering a crate engine i don't have the money right now, but i do have steady income which means i can build the engine myself and budget everything. Plus i need the experience of building an engine. but in the long run, dropping a few thousand into the engine won't bother me.

Oh, come on. If you put a 396 in it it's no longer stock if it came with a 327. Besides you could order the 502 motor without the intake, etc put it in and tell everyone it's a 396. How the heck would they no the difference. Man, think about it. And no, I am not trying to put you down. Or you could build a 454 which is plentiful in the junk yards and not as sought after as the correct year 396 would be (meaning not near as expensive). No replacement for displacement. Building a 396 to 500/500 HP/Torq would be a lot more expensive than building a 454 to that same goal. JMO.

It's nice to dream, but if this is the first engine you've ever built, a 500/500 big block 396 is a tall order, and just asking questions on the internet isn't going to get the job done for you. Knowing the parts to use isn't the whole game. Putting the engine together so it will live is not that easy.

You can get about 510 HP out of a 396 with a parts array like this:

4 bolt main block properly machined to fit all the parts
Comp Cams hyd. roller cam - something like this: Magnum Retro-Fit 304HR Code:11-460-8
Top of the line aluminum cylinder heads
Top of the line forged pistons
Heads, pistons and block chosen AND machined to get 10.0 compression.
Top of the line 4340 steel crankshaft
6" Eagle (or similar) steel rods
A whole bunch of ARP fasteners
Top of the line ignition system
Speed Demon carb - about 850 CFM or a bucket-sized double pumper.
All the engine accessories, such as water pump, pulleys, flywheel, etc.

Got about 10 Grand?

Yeah, you're right. Typo. 6.135 or 6.385.

And I should have added that this is just for the motor. Getting all this power to the ground would cost a bunch more for a trans, clutch, rear axle, suspension components, etc.

Seems like a lot of work to me when GM will sell you a ZZ502 for a bit more than $7K.

just wondering WHY 500hp ? in an elcamino for one the traction is a major problem ! and you better build the chassis to handle it , the rear end will be spinning one tire for a 1/4 mile ,THERE IS ALOT TO DO IN SET UP FOR 500 FT LBS TQ....

:whacked: :whacked: Back in 1968 I had two friends who had 396-375hp 4speeds with 456 positraction, One was a Chevelle, the other was an El Camino.I rode in the El Camino when the two were street racing. That was probably the scardest I had ever been too that point in my life. I thought that El Camino was going to twist in half . I was threatening to beat his butt if he didn't let off. The Chevelle won. It hooked up a little better than the El Camino. I can't amagine ridding in a stock chassis 66 El Camino with 500hp 500ft pounds of torque. I think You might set an all time high for 60 ft times. One thing we try to stress all the time here is that everything has to work together or You end up with a NIghtmare.

i would like tothank you all for the comments again, and i believe that i have decided to buy my friends 383 stroker for $1000 with tranmission which has all been built by a professional so i know it will be funtional. but after i have him paid off i am gonna build an engine with the 500/500 rating so the info has been very helpful. thanks again.

ive broke axels and drive shafts with el caminos and never had any concrete blocks in the back. its all in the wrist. :HMMM: :LOL:
