Theres a reson that no one bought the Cutlass anymore. a) a cutlass was a corsica rebaged. 2)they made them #$% front wheel drive and 3) the old ones never died! If you look at the Oldsmobile sales chart, they plummeted right after GM made everyone share the same motors,fenders, interior parts ect. This is also the same time that they went front whell drive. Loss of a good product made the loss of a good company. The introduction of the aurora and alero was a good attempt, but it was too little too late.

As for the 302 305 318 shootout, it seems kind of odd that they only got 289 from the 302. Im not a ford person, but their pretty "peppy" motors even in stock form. as for the 305, nope. Dont buy it. Unless there is machining involved, a crank change and a good set of heads, i dont see 300hp from the 305. Good motor for reliability, not for HP. As for the 318, maybe. Good intake, heads, exhaust, cam from hell and a decent carb may make this possible. But 345 seems a bit high. you sure it wasnt 325? Also, was this in the last 10 years? if it was, it may be possible to find the article online:)

drg84, I sold my fathers car in 92 or 93. since it had a 318 that is proberly why I remember so much about the article. I remember exactly how many horsepower the 318 had----349 horsepower. I even remember who the engine builder was.I also remember that the 302 came in just under 300hp.---298. They had to exceed the budget when they went to a bigger carburator to go over 300 hp. The only thing that i dont remember exactly was the 305, I know it was slightly over 300 hp and slightly under the $2000 budget.Keep in mind these were the engine builders that the magazine selected. three different builders would certainly have netted somewhat different results,but I have to think that because the 318 won by such a wide margin that it might also win with three more noted engine builders.I hope Rick can find his article and I hope its the same article as mine. I hope I can find my article so I can put your mind at ease.I dont want You to think anyone is trying to pull your chain.

I dont think its intentional. No fears. But it still seems like thats a lot of HP from a 318. If that kind of power was available for that price, you would expect to see a lot more 318 powered rods, but you dont. See where im coming from?

Tech and Bob, Im glad I said I think ,rather than I know. I received a book as as Christmas gift ,Cars of the fabulous 50s,It shows the 56 Chrysler 300B 354hemi having a 355hp option.I was telling a friend about about this today and He says He had just seen on a program this week that 57 Chevy was the first to have 1 hp per ci.I guess they have been feeding us this mis-information for a long time. Maybe I should check more closely. I might find that a 50 Crosley with 44 ci developed 426.5 hp. if it does I want one. After all they did make a Super Sport.

I found the article this afternoon. It was in Car Craft Magazine July, 1991 page 23. I will try to scan it in but will not be able to do it for a day or two. When I first read the article in '91, I thought it was interesting and objective enough to cut out and save. And you thought that you were the only collector of useless old information. Ha!!

Riverhorse, sorry I was so slow but I tried several times to post a copy of the article both here and in the picture gallery without success. Somewhere along the way, I managed to commit a “Fatal Error.” :) This is the “Readers Digest Condensed Version.” :) Each engine was built under $2000 and streetable.

The 305 Bowtie built by Dyno tech in Memphis had a Lunati Cam (I could not find details. One page may be missing.), Brodix Street Performer intake, and Eldebrock 600 Carb. Peak Torq was 337.7 at 4000 rpm. Peak HP was 336.3 at 3500.

The Ford 302 was built on a California Discount Warehouse package built by McFarland Inc. in Torrance Ca. It included a Competition Cam 268H cam, Weiand Action manifold, and Holley 750 carb with vacuum secondaries. Peak Torq was 326.8 at 4500 rpm. Peak HP was 309 at 5000.

The Mopar 318 was built by Dick Landry Industries in Northridge, Ca. It included a Mopar Performance cam 280 x 0.474in. P4452992, Mopar Performance manifold P4529116, Holly 600 carb. Peak Torq was 361.2 at 4500rpm. Peak HP was 349.7 at 4500. The article stated that they also did runs with a Holley 750 which generated greater horsepower but the torque dropped. The writer did not give these figures. The article did do a foot note test of a 318 with a Mopar Supercharger at 9# boost and a 750 carb yielded 401.9 at 4300 and 422.2 HP at 6000.

Riverhorse, hopefully this information will help you to decide not take money out of your car budget to buy Ginko and Genseng and memory building stuff. :)

Thanks Rick , How did you do that so fast? I had been trying to condense mine all night .I think people will get the point by now,Don't You? Im a GM and Chevrolet man but you would think Im a Chrysler man after this thread. We've done enough to show others that the 318 does have some possibilities.

Every motor has potential. Now lets pool our cash together and make a 300HP 4.2 I6! I have.... $11

It looks like both publications were using the same tests. Sorry to duplicate your hard work, Riverhorse.

In the early sixties my uncle worked for Chrysler here in Evansville. My cousins had some quick little 318 Plymouths with automatic transmissions. They argued that the Chrysler automatics were faster that the other manufacturer’s straight transmission. But during that era, around here the 283 and 327 Chevys pretty well set the standards.

Drg84, Goood luck on your 300 HP program. Maybe Car Craft magazine will sponsor you and publish it. :) Then Riverhorse and I can spend another 6 to 8 hours trying to remember and post the results in about 2018. I wonder if will be able to count to 300 then. Oh, help us, where is this post going? :)
