429 help

Hi All,
I picked up a 429 out of a '71 Lincoln. I want to tear it down and rebuild. Not a race car just a nice stout street car. Up to 500 hp at fly. I was wondering the best and prolly cheapest way to achieve this goal. Just prep the block and have the rods and crank checked and freshened up? New intake, cam, carb, Freshen up heads, etc. I really love the smaller cars from the sixties. Will the 429 fit into a falcon without tubing or any major mods? If not how about a mid sized Galaxie? I have a C-6 trans for it too. What's the best car for the 429/C-6 combo? I'm looking to go with the smallest car without having to do serious chassis work. A wagon would be kool. I know I threw a lot out there. Any suggestions about proven setups for a stout street car?
I built a SBC 350 right out of HS with some success and now at 25 built a 650hp EFI 331. I now wanna try my luck with the BBF. Plus I got the engine and trans for 50 BUX!

Dunno about the Galaxie or Falcon, but if you like trucks, they make a kit to put a 429/460 in an older model Ranger. I always thought that would be a fun project.

I had a 64 Galaxie that I put a 460 and C-6 in and it went in nicely with hardly any problems. I do remember having to modify the mounts but don't remember exactly what I did to them now. It's been 10 years ago. :) :) :) :)

You might be able to put a 429 in a Falcon but you'd probably have to spread the shock towers apart, with a unibody I woulden't put 500 hp in it ( It would requrie a tube frame ) and also, if it was a 6cyl Falcon, it would have a weak 4 lug 8" rear, so, as much as I like Falcons ( Cause I own 1, of course ), I'd have to lead you to using a Galaxie/ Fairlaine/ Torino because they are framed cars and it would be easier and safer.

FAIRLANE!!!! Damn, that's it. I knew there was another Ford out there. I couldn't think of it. Yeah, the Fairlane. That was the platform for the Thunderbolt huh? Is 500Hp to much for stock rods?

Do you know the scoup on the DIVE block?

I'm not shure about the Dive block. more than likely your gonna need aftermarket rods. The Galaxie/ and Fairlaine was the same platform but, yes the thunderbolt was designed on the Fairlaine.

Up to 61, yeah they were. But after the introduction of the small Fairlane in 1962, they are totally different. The Fairlane used a unibody construction like on the Falcons. the 66 and later Fairlanes were wider and the same width as the 66 and later falcons. In 1972 ford went to a frame under the Torino's. And some were sold with 460's in them.

So Duane, sounds like a what, '66 and up Fairlane is the platform for my 429 street machine.

I always thought they were the same. Torinos are off what platform, the Small Fairlane or the Galaxie platform?

Todd, I am not sure that a 460/429 will fit in the Fairlane without modifying the shock towers. I do know that it will fit in a galaxie. That's what I'd look for if I was wanting to do it the easy way.

When the Torino went to a full frame in 72, they did away with the shock towers.

I think your gonna want to go with a Galaxie, because of the frame unless, you want a pre '62 Fairlane. The unibody would probably be to light for 500 hp. Also, as Duane said after '72 the Torino went to a frame and a 460 was offered in it, there is suspension parts and mounts to make that 429 fit, and it would probably pretty much bolt in, but you would need the stiffer front suspension for the 460 because of the engine weight diffrence unless the car you got has or had a 460.

The 68 through 71 Torino was a model of the Fairlane. The 72 Torino came about when the Fairlane was dropped all together and they changed the frame and bodies.

A little while ago ( b4 I bought the falcon ) I looked at a good shape, '68 Torino, not fastback, 32k original documented miles, orig paperwork, needed paint but had no cancer, and had mint original interior, had a 351 with an automatic. The guy only wanted like 1500 or 2000 for it but, I figured, I didn't have that much to spend and even if I did, it was too nice/ worth to much to drive daily. The reason I asked is because it lookd just like a Galaxie of the same yearspan ( mid- later 60's ). Guess that kinda stumped me. I actully thought it was a Galaxie until I saw the rear window post that had the Torino Emblem on it.

Matt and Todd, You know, in 66 through 69 you could get FE's in the Fairlane/Torinos. And 70 and 71 You could get the 429 CJ and SCJ. I always thought the 68/69 had the same shock towers as the 70/71 but I am not sure. I guess the only way to find out would find one of each and measure.

Maybe Dave Severson knows. Hope he can enlighten us.

Yeah, Denny. My 68 Torino came with a 390 but they had the GT heads that were doubled drilled and specail exhaust manifolds to get past the shock towers. A standard 390 head and manifold arrangement wouldn't work without messaging the shock towers a little. I don't know if the 70/71 429 CJ's and SCJ's had special towers of if Ford found another way to get them in there.

Putting my 460 in my 67 cougar. I didn't want to be cramp, so the first thing i did was take the shock towers out. And install a mustang II front suspension in it. Not sure on the other cars you mention.

Is there a web site you can view cars by year and all the models and engine packages? I know awhile ago I had a book from the library that listed that. I could just try to find it at the library but why bother if I can stay home and look online, hahhaa.
