Hi, this is rockrollmanny. I have a 1968 Firebird, running a pontiac (poncho) 455 (.30 over). I purchased all my engine parts from Jim Butler Performance Pontiac, 6x heads prepared by Jim Butler. Dyno @ 318 HP at the wheels. If you are a pontiac person, I recommend "Pontiac High Performance" magazine. Too the "National Firebird & Trans Am Club". What is your goal for the poncho motor, street/strip, all out racing ? Street use, keep compression no higher than 9.7 (91-92 octane gaso). Check out the following web sites, Jim Butler Pontiac, Rock&Roll Engineering , this are two that come to mind. There are more and they are all good. just a mild street strip combo. i was in the process of getting a 55 chevy but gave that up and am now looking at a 67 gto thats why i am wanting to know about the poncho's. i was thinking a good running street/strip 400 or maybe a 421 any insight would be cool also thanks for the links as i am going to dig in and read as much about poncho motors as i can thanks............scooter

are the edelbrock performer rpm packages for the ponchos good?..............scooter

Short answer: Yep - If you get the entire package. If you don't buy the Edelbrock heads, though, make sure that the heads arent the choke point. Cam and carb don't do much good if the heads won't flow. A SD421 or 455 would be nice, but the 400 in my '68 GTO built to similar specs worked very nicely, and the 400's are much more common.

Scooter, we did a '79 Bird for a friend of mine, went .030 on the 400 ci block and used the entire Edelbrock performer package on it. The car has a 4 speed with a 4:11 posi rear, runs great!! I used to have a GTO bracket car a couple decades ago, got lucky and scored a set of Ram Air heads for it. Those heads are very rare now, and the Edelbrocks are much lighter and probably flow better anyway. Anyway, the Goat was a very consistant high 11's bracket car, motor held up great. Give it a go, think you will like the results.
