Stay away from crimp connectors...
Just became new owner of a 72 El Camino Chopped 4 in. but also rt side crashed into a pole. got me another 71 for parts and changed over the frame, disc brakes, changed to a 350 from a 305 changed the rear end to 10 bolt with 308's chopped the windshield wiper blade to fit the windshild never gave that a thought. and will have to lower the bench seat to see out the front window the guy I got it from for $650 was smaller and dumber and left some of his DNA in the car because the seats where held down with sheet metal screws.

hello i just picked up a 72 as well runs great got a 350 in it and thats about it a little rust but can be fixed brakes are a little scary and the steering wheel bounces when you turn it all the way left or right but other than that its cherry. just lookin for some advice on where to start
hey bigpat i was going to ask you a question about how to tell a true SS from a clone do you know where i can find out? the answer to yours take your time on it dont rush things it will pay off in the long run.
Hey y'all,
I just picked up a '73 a few weeks ago.
the body is pretty straight but there is some light rust under the vinyl top.
The engine is a smallblock 350. All of the running gear seems to be original, except for a few drop-in mods that the previous owner did. (chrome valve covers, 14 inch chrome air cleaner, etc.)
It runs well and is a great daily driver. Once I rebuild the guts and cure it's case of ugly, it ought to be a beauty.
(The last owner used cheap white acrylic paint with some homepainted blue/purple graphics:HMMM: )
Time and work should make her shine though.
Aren't ElCo's great?
I have an 86 Caballero, i dont think its considered a "classic" but i like it, rebuilding a 350 for it goin in front of a 350 tans and hopefully a 373 rear, black with the original graphics for a diablo, i have also been looking for functional side pipes, YoungMalibu has some on his G body but he hasnt PMed me back yet oh well, If you guys arent already members you should check out Elcaminocentral.com its full of info and wonderful elkys
Had a 71 with an identity crisis for a while. did a impersionation of a 4x4, rally car, and 'Dukes of Hazard' charger on me. Was way into the throttle, hit some nice glare of the late afternoon sun, saw the turn too late, went through a small field where at the end of the field there was a nice berm of dirt left over from someone building a driveway. the berm was in perfect ramp like form and I ended up jumping the driveway. cleared it by about 6 - 8 feet both up and out. frame damage was too much for me to fix so it got sold. I wish every other day i still had that car.
anyone looking for a camper/topper for 70-72? white with blue tinted windows. sweet retro look and great for road trips.
I just sold my 59 Elky. i was sad to see her go. they were the best ones chevy ever buillt IMO next to the 65's.Quote:

I'm working on my '67...needs a trans.
Damn...no wonder this thread died quick...no posts since yesterday???
Three days...no El Camino talk...WTF??? Over...
Well I'm gonna go ahead and talk to myself sunce I'm the only one who checks in on this thread again...so...
I put in some new coil springs in the Camino. Once the $ flows a bit better I may go coilovers...But for now it's springs and shocks all around. I charged up the battery and the power came on. Lights radio and such...Hopefully next week I'll put the flywheel back on, have a new radiator and a tune up. Now if i can ony find a damn tranny!!! One's coming soon...I can smell it!!! Here are some pics from yesterday.
Damn, that's why they stopped producing El camino's...couldn't keep anyone interested I guess. Damn Shame.
New to the site here. I am doing a 76 El I picked up a couple of yrs ago in Idaho.
Was in pretty rough shape, I have been doing the bondo treatment and am almost ready to paint. I have never done body work before. This has been a real challange. But it is looking pretty good so far. I rebuilt the 4oo sbc in it. b ored .30 with a mild cam and beefed up heads. Flat piston, I think I am pretty close to 10 to 1 compression. Runs really great, also did the 350 turbo tranny, must have done it right as it really goes good, put in a shift kit at the same time. My son has helped me some but keeps complaining I never let him help . He seemed to want to sleep too much ha ha. He took it for a spin and punched it down a little, said it was really nice. Made me feel good , glad it runs and didn't blow up. It has been 25 yrs since I built an engine. Was nice to get my feet wet again.
I sent you an email about transmission needsQuote:

I thought to share this picture of my daughters dog that just passed last week. His name is Jones and was 13 1/2 years. My el camino needs no introduction and is driven daily
Sorry 'bout Jones. 13 plus years is a long time and anybody that doesn't love dogs will never understand the grief and sorrow we experience when loosing one. I'm sure God's got a place in heaven for our dogs (I'm not sure about cats, though)..
Condolences to you daughter.
Killer El Camino - I'll someday own one as I have always liked them.
Regards,
Glenn
Hey, Thanks Glenn, She had this dog for half her life so far as she's 27. Come spring break we will be dropping in an LT1 350 in her 78 elco. She loves to wrench on her car. The 66 already has an LT1 with a 200r4.
Well if you're at all like I am (and it sounds like you are) time with the cars is great but time with the kids is precious! Some of my fondest memories are of a little five year old sitting on the fender asking me things like, "what does the 'caterbrater' do daddy?" When I explained that it mixes the gas and air together properly she responded, "why don't we get already mixed up from the gas station?"
Well that little princess will be 27 this year and she still likes cars and her daddy. What blessings!!
Love your little girl lots - She's fortunate to have you for a father!
Regards,
Glenn
Greeting from South Central US. Just bought our first Elky. 65 V8 Custom. Bought this for my 16 year old son. Going to be a father son project. Very driveable. Just needs paint. We're going to tackel the paint next week. Let you all know how it goes.

Hey, I just joined this site. I love elkys. I have an 83 I am redoing. I am in the middle of body work and paint. The motor is done, 350 ci, 60over. It is pushing 400 to 420 hp, 375 to 380 tq. I hope to have it all done in time for the Turkey Rod Run in November at Daytona. While that is going on I am always looking for either a 69, 71 or 72 elky. Those are my favorite years.
