Very cool read Ken, thanks for sharing. I always wondered how Tommy got the bucks to do the serious racing he did..........I don't remember that he did that many TV shows to pay for that sort of habit, but I guess he did.
This is the rig I remember seeing at Pittsburgh International Dragway when TV Tommy came there as an exhibitor. It gave us a glimpse of how the other half lived.

Know who used to drive the push car for Tommy's dragster?
Some guy with a last name of Prudhomme... think he went out on his own and did fairly well for himself...

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
