Check out this link I saw at another forum. Next time you think bad about a rat rod, remember some of the cars in these photos :)

AWESOME PHOTOS!:3dSMILE:
Thanks for the reminder about where it all came from:cool:
Old time drag racing----bunch of really, really unsafe looking cars!!!! Just goes to show the good old days weren't really all that great!!!! I like the nostalgia cars, especially the ones that are built to current SFI specs!!! We lost a lot of really good racers because of what we didn't know about safety!!!!
Yes we did! I have seen Rat Rods that look super safe compared to some of the stuff we raced with.
Thanks for the ride Pat. I've never seen so many C/Altered cars in my life. I think if I had a C/A and pulled in there and looked around, I'd just trailer-up and go home.
Hey Ken, how come I never saw you jump that high when you flagged 'em off?
Check out the altered wheelbase on Petty's 43 Jr.
Being in the air when they're coming at you is not a good place to be. Besides if I'd have jumped that high with the horseshoe cleats, I'd probably have busted my buns.:3dSMILE: If you ever noticed I always turned toward the car that left first to keep the noise from screwing with my hearing.
Great pictures
Wow, great pics, thanks for the link!
Many thanks, Pat.
Brought back many memories and I'm glad you stirred them up again.
And you're right, Dave. Ridiculously unsafe from one end to the other, but those cars were state of the art in the early fifties. The open cars made me think of the first roll bar we had on our roadster. It was inch and a half water pipe and plenty strong, but it came up to just about my skinny neck. Scary!
I'd also be interested to know where that strip is (was) located.

I think the sash on the Queen says Roanoke. I would guess Roanoke Virginia, mountainous and pine-covered. That would make sense with Petty showing up too, it's only a little ways from Randelman to Roanoke.
Too cool...My guess is somewhere in Virginia, as the trophy girls banner says Miss Roanoak
Awesome!!......Absolutely awesome pics! Thanks for sharing
cool site, mine would fit right in there:LOL::LOL:
Brought back some good memories, I used to go allot around 62-68 time frame.....
