    Cowl Airbox?

I'm looking to fab up an aluminum plate to separate the carb from the hot engine compartment air so it gets fresh air from the cowl on my new fiberglass hood (5" cowl). I have the metal work figured out and will cut a big hole in the middle of the sheet and rivet it to the bottom of the air-cleaner base.

My question is what should I use for foam around the edges to seal against the hood? I'm looking for some "non-breathable" foam... I have some foam at work that was used as packing material but it seems air can get through it too easy...

Any of you make one of these and what did you use to seal the plate against the underside of the hood?

    Thanks,

    -Chris

I fit mine close to the hood and use a rubber seal that slides right over the top edge of the air box. Get the seal from an autobody supply company, and a good rep with a big catalog!!!!!!! Lots of good choices if you get your hands on one of their catalogs.... Or, Lowe's, Menard's, etc. is a heck of a good source for such things....Check out the heating and plumbing departments.

How about the rubber seal from around the outside of a trunk opening where the trunk closes down on it? It's a closed cell foam with a smooth surface. Some were glued on, and some were a push on over the lip of the trunk. Should be long enough from any car trunk to do what you need. Seems to me the Cadillac's had the push on type, likely get a section of it for next to nothing at a wrecker. Should be a lot of different styles if you go looking. Sniper

Thanks Dave and Sniper... those are good ideas.

I'll have to get the rest of it put together and determine the fitment for how tall the sealing material will have to be. I'm just planning to have a flat sheet about 2'x3' that will be at the height of the carb inlet.

Some I've seen at the track use some kind of foam like what you would find inside a seat cushion or packing material about two inches thick and stacked up 3-6" or so to get fit to bottom of hood. I'll see what I can find at Lowe's after I figure out how tall it needs to be.
