I have a vega that I want to put a 9" rear end in but have a few questions. The stock rear end with tires ,outside edge of tire to outside edge is 61 1/2". This has the tires just inside the fender lip about 1". I want to run a 10-12" wide slick. Is there a standard backspacing to use with racing tires?
We have had 4 Vega's, with a 283, 350's and a 427, all with 4sp's, we used chrysler 8 3/4 rear ends from Darts in them, they are 1" wider then the stock Vega rear end. We would remove the brackets from the Vega and weld them on the 8 3/4 rear end, never broke one, and we weren't kind to them.

Well the reason I ask is a car builder told me that 3 1/2" was the standard back spacing. I guess I could stick with that and that will keep my axles as short as possible,is this correct?
Ideally on the rear wheels, the axle would be centered in the wheel to minimize wear on the wheel bearings.... In a drag car, don't think it's a real big deal what backspace you run as it's not going to get a lot of miles on it anyway. Worn out wheel bearings from uneven loading will be the least of your parts breakage problems when drag racing!!!!!
I figure It would be best with the 3 1/2" BS to keep the axles as short as possible?
