As an observer, I've noticed the one that uses personal attacks to make their point about a mere piece of machinery usually loses the debate. It's been said time and time again... this is a HOT ROD site. Not an IMPORT site. Sounds juvenile to repeat it again but it's TRUE.

my 2 cents
The thing I noticed must about DSSA is he didn't even bother to put in his birthdate, so we have no way of knowing " the literal list of cars he has built over the years". It just sounds to pat of an arguement to believe.Duane S

Although I went through four (4) engines with a '66 VW and two engine rebuilds on a 1600 VW dune buggy as well as a lot of frustration with restoring an MG midget and setting up another MG midget for my son to commute to college, the issue was performance with MILEAGE! I think there are two main factors in the rise of Japanese imports: mileage and quality control. The U.S. automakers got careless in the '60s with poor quality control in spite of muscle car engineering. This got better, but it is too late since large corporations are international now. This became quite apparent when I rebuilt a "Ford" Pinto 2000 for an economical daily driver and found it had SAE bolt bosses on the outside of the block but the internals were all metric from Germany! Now the Chrysler Corp is under German control and KIAs are Korean Fords, so brand loyalty is very complex with a recent example of the last few years of Oldsmobiles powered by Chevy engines. Thus if the average American thinks the quality control and mileage of a Honda is better, the free market system will favor Hondas! The decline of the American Hot Rod will increase as gas prices go up unless perhaps the Buick V6 becomes the replacement for the SBC, but other rodders have tried to popularize the neat little Buick V6 and found few takers. If other people want to buy quality Hondas to get comfort and higher mileage, then we will have to hope that the new Ford Hybrid SUV will sell in the U.S. with it's 39 mpg and 4 cyl engine. If we want back-in-the seat acceleration and the fun of building our own machines we will have to pay for the gas and just understand that the old dependence on hot rod IC engines is changing around us. Although I am looking forward to "brisk performance" from my new 350 SBC in a light '29 Ford body, I have three other cars for everyday use and it could be that hotrods as we know them will disappear and there will only be high priced sports cars available for those who are able and willing to pay for the gas of performance machines. It does little good to rail against "ricers" when people buy them for economical transportation and nothing more. Some have said that the original reason for American hot rods was to provide home-built substitutes for expensive sports cars. My experienced conclusion on MGs are that they are "TOYS" made for slow driving on country roads, but we have 4/6 lane highways. Maybe we need to take another look at turbocharged Buick V6 power, but the ultimate source of the HP is the liquid fuel so the game is to have efficient energy conversion. My solution is to keep my hot rod for special events and use my 4 cyl Pontiac Sunfire for every day transportation. Why not start drilling for oil in Alaska and just paint the rigs camoflage white and green to blend in with the tundra???????

Yes, showing a truly great mentality around here. I guess those of us with open minds to *any* quick car (be it domestic or import) that someone's put time and effort must *obviously* be anti-domestic.
I think some of you feel threatened. Otherwise, explain the uproar that seems to have occured when someone states that they think that all cars are able to be appreciated.
As to the age comment, if you'll *ALSO* notice (Mr. Sleuth), I didn't post *any* of that information, as it A) wasn't required, and B) doesn't really make a difference. If my resume is required, I'd be happy to go over it with you. Otherwise, I'm 30, and have been wrenching on things since I got my first dirtbike @ age 12, then quads when I raced them, then my first car @ 14 (No, wasn't handed a running car--was handed a non-running car, and told to have it running by the time I was 16 or I kept walking). Sure, not the oldest or gearhead in here, but I build all my own race motors (machining not included, but I provide the specs,) port my own heads, build up my own transmissions (and for others around the nation), design my own turbo systems, and tune my own stand-alone EFI systems. So you could say that even though I'm no automotive god, I'm pretty comfortable around the engine bay of a car.
Although, it does quite amuse me (and I'm giving you ammo here) that even though I can program my own timing and fuel maps, give me a carb and a vacuum advance ignition system, and I'm scratching my head for the most part...thus why I started browsing this board.
A little
At this point, I'll bid you all a goodnight, it's 2:37 and I just got in from working putting a cage into the newest project--but you know, those 10 point cages are just for looks in imports.

So you want people on this forum to see your point of view while at the same time putting down anyone who disagrees with your point of view? Not to mention your words are being read by everyone on this thread and I am probably safe in assuming most if not all are forming the same negative image of you. Don't you think you would be better served by putting some intelligent arguments together to make your case? All you are accomplishing is alienating everyone and reinforcing the so called stereotype you are so eager to overcome.

I think you may be putting words in my mouth. I didn't say anything about "the board" I didn't know there was a board. My reply to your "complete idiot" comment was a general statement. Meaning "in general" if you call anyone an "Idiot" don't expect to get any respect in return.

Hey, thanks for your comment about me being a rodent for jumping on board ( I assume you mean me since you are quoting MY post).
I think you need to actually *READ* my post. My comments have nothing to do with cars............. they have everything to do with having common respect for other people.
----------------------------------------------
If you read the posts (and comprehend them--might be stretching it here a little bit), I clearly stated that all import enthusiasts (and some people have stated "all import owners this, all import owners that") aren't half-wits that think their 13 (at best) second Hondas are faster than everything else on the road and think that all domestics are inferior.
This is quite clear in the initial posts had you taken the time to read them through. However, I understand.
No, I really don't think you do. Not to be disrespectful but I really DON'T think you do understand. I did take the time to read EVERY post. And it is abundantly clear you have had a negative attitude from YOUR first post and it's gotten increasingly negative as you have tried to make your case.
I don't think YOU are reading all the posts in this thread. Did you read my analogy about jumping in a shark tank with a bloody steak in your pocket.
Lets break it down in real simple terms:
Your import argument is the "steak"............. There's nothing wrong with steak. I happen to like steak. But as good as steak is there are some places it doesn't belong, like in your pocket when your in a shark tank. What that means is a HOT ROD FORUM may not be the best place to make your import case.
This forum is the shark tank........... There's nothing wrong with sharks in a tank either. Just don't jump in there with a bloody steak in your pocket. What that means is don't expect to make any converts here. If we wanted to talk imports we would go to an IMPORT FORUM. I don't have ANYTHING against you. I just don't care much for your attitude .
I only explain this simple analogy in this great a deal, because I think if you really did read it and if you really did understand it, you would see just how futile your argument is. But I think maybe the simplicity of the analogy has been lost on you.
Once again... Let me make this VERY VERY clear........ my commentary is NOT about the merits of your import argument. It IS about the methods of delivering your argument.
.............................................................
Yog see someone with open mind defend someone (while not in the least putting down the other side of the coin), so Yog jump on bandwagon.
Who is Yog??????????

I am sure you will want to come back with some self redeeming self promoting reply as to why you believe putting ANYONE down personally will bolster your argument for imports. Just don't be so surprised when those you have alienated with your attitude don't care about you opinion. You know for someone with such a self proclaimed high I.Q., you could use some work on your diplomacy skills. Even a lemming like me knows to get respect you first have to earn the respect of others.
The good book says "Love your neighbor as yourself" I hope you have more respect for yourself than you have displayed here for us.

I think you need to subscribe to your own theories.
Let's re-cap here.
I posted:
[/b]
Those of us who are into imports and to actually making them quick don't subscribe to the F%@# and the F%&#)@ crap--in fact, we probably despise it more-so than you do on the account that it gave us all a bad name.
I've been in this sport since around '94, and can attest that "movie" did everything but drive me away from the import scene. I can't count the times on my bodily digits that I've wanted to snap some little *%#*'s neck when they ask "Yo, man! That sh!t have NAAWS on it!?"
You'll also find that a lot of the more knowledgeable ones will also be the 1st to drool over some classic muscle.
As much as I like my quick imports, I also love me some big cubes.
Now back to searching for knowledge on this '72 C-10 project....
Edit: One more note. Don't think that there aren't a few of us "serious" import enthusiasts that don't like surprising some of the cocky domestic muscle owners as well.
We all view through the fence--just sometimes from different sides of it.
[/b]
Then Mr. "Brick" posted:
This thread has turned out to be a place for visiting rice-brains to unload the burdon of guilt they carry being at a real steel american car site. I don't care if they turn 6's on pump gas and get 50 miles to the gallon doing it for only $100 bucks. I WILL NEVER OWN ONE!! You will not sell me on them little critters because they sound like sewing machines on Steriods! It may be the latest and greatest thing, maybe even the best cars being made by factorys but they suck. People are constantly coming in here and trying thier best to convince people that ricers are fast there for they are great, Why? Why is that you suppose? Because they are men and they know in thier hearts what is REALLY COOL and what is imported and labeled cool.
Rice is best mixed with cream of chiken soup and onions and hot peppers and wrapped in a tort! Ummm good!
I merely stated that people should keep an open mind, and stated that I find both imports and domestics impressive.
Next thing I know, I'm a "rice-brain, unloading my burden of guilt and trying to convert everyone to an import owner".
So, as you can see, I am returning the lack of respect given to me by Brickman initially. So apply your theories once again....
As to the "Lemming" comment, the jist of someone being labeled a "Lemming" isn't that they're a "rodent", but someone who follows blindly. This association stemmed from a Disney nature film in the 50's showing lemmings following the lead animal off of a cliff and into the sea to their deaths without much regard to individual common sense.

Everything you are typing here is just reinforcing what I have pointed out to you. You seem to have some sort of chip on your shoulder. You are not getting my drift here at all. The fact that you continue to defend your "attitude in general" proves that out. I think you are so wrapped up in being right....... that you don't see it. Don't you understand that if you alienate your audience you will soon be talking to yourself, and NO ONE will take you serious. Your shooting yourself in the foot here. This isn't rocket science.
(That excuse that somebody else started it is pretty lame, Use your I.Q. and take the high road.)
Instead of taking quotes out of context....... I looked at all your posts from first to last, and if you don't see what I am trying to tell you, that just goes to my point.
BTW.... If I were a lemming I would be calling you names and trying my best to belittle you. And then I would be expecting you to listen to me now wouldn't I? No............ I don't expect you to listen to me, because you obviously don't agree that respect will get you further than attitude.

Next your gonna have sumbodie' swearin' they can push a straight chain up a hill. He HE Or, leap a buildin' wit' a single bound.

Last of all: if you had done a thread search on imports you would have known what you were in for before you ever started typing. Or maybe you did, and just wanted to pick a fight. There's a lot a things going on in this world to get upset about. Isn't it a little beneath your "I.Q. " to get sooo upset over such a trivial thing as what someone else may or may not think of an import.
Sheesh !!!!!!!!!! enough already !!!!!!!"PLAN" your life like you will live to 120.

No, the point is, I defended my point of view (yes, I forgot how being open-minded is such a horrible thing). Whether or not *YOU* agree with the way I did it means little to me. Yes, you can twist it around to a "he started it statement" that I was trying to make, but simply put, I was returning the favor. But then again, I don't see you whining about his insulting posts which pre-empted the whole ordeal, which makes me care even less about your ideas of social etiquette.
Once again--it's READING COMPREHENSION.
Why do you continually post comments about my IQ? Was it that the point of that post (which was a response to another members boasts of his IQ, and simply to point out that IQ scores don't mean squat in the real world) was too well hidden in there for you to grasp?
I find it quite amusing that you continually use that as a slam, and the only thing I said about IQ scores was that they don't mean jack. Kinda pointless when all you're doing is basically reiterating what I stated, now isn't it?
Get a grip.

1 last thing before I shut up on this thread....................
I have taken shots at people on this forum a couple times during my stay here......... but it was ALWAYS in fun........ NEVER meant as a serious attack on ANYBODY. I'm a very easy going guy 99% of the time. I can take some verbal jabs 99% of the time. I'm just telling you DSSA, even if you are right 100% of the time....... nothing, nothing justifies bad attitude and disrespect .
It's obvious your not going to concede this point. You are either too proud to lower yourself to admit it or you really don't understand. That's too bad.
There are a lot of great people on this site. They are for the most part very entertaining and VERY informative. Sorry, if you don't want to play well with others.
I apologize to CHR for allowing myself to get caught up in this pointless discussion.Last edited by pro70z28; 05-29-2004 at 11:40 AM.

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
