If I decide to cage the Ranchero, what size moly tubing should I be pricing?? Sorry for the dumb question but I haven't seen an NHRA rule book for years, just wondering if I maybe should make the car NHRA legal in case I decide to participate in motor contests sanctioned by a governing body other then the Hwy. 34 Bypass Timing Association. Got my driver's license back last month, thinking about trying to keep it this time!!!!!
Thanks, Denny. It looks like my answer is 1 5/8", .083 wall. I ordered the SFI spec book, gotta price some tubing now. Thanks for the help. I might as well build it legal if I'm going to go to the time and expense of caging it.
Yup Tech, sounds like they have updated a lot of the bar and cage stuff since the last time I was down the track. (probably about '87). I ordered the SFI spec sheet for an 8.90 car, my machinist is getting a bit carried away on the motor pieces so if I'm gonna be running that quick, safety is going to be a main concern. The Ranchero is full framed now, 2" X 4" Rectangular tubing, so it looks like I will be legal there.??? No problem putting the down tubes through the back of the cab, I left enough area above the rear window opening to fit them through. I looked at the pics of Pro's funny car cage, seems like the added safety would be well worth the effort. Might want to let the kid make a few passes in the car, too, so it has to be safe!!!!!!! The whole plan is still in the planning stages, but as it stands now, would like to do some drag racing with it, then change out the trans and gears, add an overdrive, and go to Bonneville with it. That is still the one place I gotta make a few passes before I tip over.
When my SFI book gets here I will do some studying, then probably get some help on interpreting the rules. Thanks in advance.
Hey Tech, I have the 25.2, 25.4, and 25.5 specs in a pdf format if you want to have a set of them on your computer too. I can email them to you, if you want. I know you have them in book form, cause you always mention that you don't have them with you. Let me know. Or not.

The further I get on the cage the more sense it's beginning to make. I've talked to a couple of the local tech guys and I seem to be on the right track. It's very hard to teach an old dog new tricks................... but not impossible.

Actually Streets, we are in the process of deciphering the B-Ville rule book and classification system now trying to determine what class the Ranchero would even run in. Definitely would be in a modifed classs, some question as to whether they would call it a pickup or a coupe!!! I will have to submit photos and specs when it's a little further along, then get an idea where it will land in class.
