Oh comeon streets, you know better than that. When you can drive a "Stock Car" on the streets and still win a race in the oval, then we'll talk.

Somewhere in my set of Shelby American Automobile Club magazines from about 1976, I have an article talking about the 1965 427 Street/Comp Cobra, which was a shworoom item, and its documented top speed of 206MPH. Then in the late 1980s or early 1990s, I read about a Lamborghini that had finally taken that crown. This was for US-legal street cars, and there was some argument that the Lambo was a gray-market or Euro car, snuck in. Anyway, that was in Car and Driver somewhere around 1990.
I talked to a guy at the local Ford dealer, who's been told the 2006 or 2007 (not clear which year) Mustang will come in a GT350 and GT500 trim, and the GT500 is planned for 500HP. That's the future, so doesn't count, but Ol' Shel is all over TV these days, so I think the '06 or '07 restart of the Shelby line is likely. Shelby owns the GT350 and GT500 names - sold Cobra to Ford years ago - and sued Ford over the 1984 "GT350" 20th anniversary cars (and won).
But with so small a run (don't have the exact number in hand, but it was tiny), the '65 S/C 427 Cobra could be argued as production or not. As a kid, I saw one in a car dealership in Los Angeles, but that's not proving anything.
The Ford Lightning pickup was one of the fastest quarter-milers for a number of years, but it was running 390HP out of a 331 blown engine. Never liked the exhaust both routed out one side, but it was a good truck. Don't think the new Roush F150 is nearly as nice a package. The Harley-Davidson F150 was a detuned version of the same thing - something like 350HP, but was loaded down with toys and was a crew cab - never saw any times or speeds on it.
If anyone has the particulars on the Lightning or H-D F150, I'd be interested. Same for the Chevy SS454 pickup they built around 1990. It had to be pretty fast for its time.
OK drg84... Since you caused this debate . Are you considering 0-60, and 1/4 mile times along with top speed or just top speed.
I like this debate/discussion but it is your thread, let us know what it is you are looking for.
David, there are few cars that hit their top speed in the 1/4 mile. What I'm saying is give me the 1/4 mile time for the Quickest car, and the top speed for the fastest car. That way, theres a showing for less quick but faster cars:)
1/4 Mile , would be between the Viper ,Saleen S7 & the Ford GT.Quote:

1/4 mile times vary within 3 tenths of each other .
:o :o I have a 90 454ss not particularly fast with 300 hp but will do a spectacular burnout. In stock form the computer delays the throttle on acceleration and limits top to about 110. :( On the up side it's a real stump puller with 4:11s. Pulls my toter very well. Installed a Gearvendors overdrive with a 28% over and chipped it. Makes supposedly 350 ponies now but they are all Shetlands.Quote:

Tried to find specs. for Ford's old Pantera (the one with the 351C) and couldn't come up wih anything. I remember stories of 210+ mph.
Dunno.......
The Panteras wouldn't go past 160 (Don't know why I remember this). The Pantera had the same problem as the Lamborghini Mura. the Front end would lift at 150 (Muras more so)Quote:

i know of one Pantera that was clocked by N.C. st. police at over 180 mph and the reason i know because they tried to put me in jail for being the driver. wish i had been. **) **)
I just went to a New Car Show today and saw the prices. Wow. The new 'Vette is 70k,ish and the Viper was 85k,ish. The Ford GT had no price tag.(what does that tell ya).The prettiest car I saw was a XK8 Jaguar,96k! I'll build my own. Mike
k...here it is, the end all to the debate....

Mopars are the top 2........I'm not surprised.
rumor has it that shelby is doing a gt 500 for the nes stang and it is supposed to be a bad mother. saw it in a mag at my old mans house. not sure if it can keep up with the viper or z06. iit is now official. shelby and ford made up and made a killer car for just under 40,000. it is said to have 450 hp and a savvy suspension to compete with corvette and the viper hopefully. shelby took it for a 5 hour test drive and was amazed with it. it is the most powerful production mustang ever so buckle up chevy and dodge because ford is back in the hunt.
