Alternative alternator locations.

I have always hated my alternator sticking out from behind the grill shell on the drivers side so the other day I decided to relocate it someplace out of the way. The lower mounts wouldn't work because of the steering box so I made the one you see here. I had the same issues in my coupe so I made an alternator bracket that hung it low and out of the way. This is during an engine change that's going on right now. Should be back up and running before Billetproof.

Same Denso alternator as Bill's, but on an SBC with a simple bracket in a '33. Similar brackets are made for the 10si alt you already have, but it's tight for a '32 especially if it's pinched any.

WOW those are some nice brackets! you guys have access to better equipment than I do, I had to use a sawzall and torch to fab mine.:D I don't think I have room for the mini either.

If you run an electric fuel pump you could get a bracket to mount to the original fuel pump boss and hang it low on the passenger side. That's were I have my A/C compressor on mine. Alt is in regular position above the p/s pump.

Note my stock alternator location on the 460 was down low by a frame member causing engine placement issues. March performance makes a nice relocation bracket to keep it high and out of the way.

March does make nice hi quality products but they are a little over the top for my tastes. I don't care much for billet or hi dollar stuff.

Jake I searched and searched for relocation brackets and in the 460 catagory the choices for a little style are few. One nice thing is the sell them powder coated black for those of us wanting a little less flash!

To bad yer not closer, LOL! you could drive it over and I would make you some!:LOL:

Would you have the Denso part number for the small alternator you pictured. Also would you know the amp rating and body diameter.

Trying to locate an extra small alternator for my '32 roadster build with pinched rails, so room is very tight.

I looked on the one I've got, no number, but they're commonly refered to as "mini-alternator". If you look on ebay for example, you'll see lots of them that match the one in the picture. From there you might get a number to look for one locally. Or check with a Kubota (maybe other manufacturers of small tractors as this unit is very common to them) dealer.

The nominal diameter (not counting the mounting ears) is 3 1/2".

The tractor ones are often 40 amp, though I've seen them also listed in 50 and 60 amp as well.

Did an Ebay search plus found Powermaster have them listed. The max amps I can find on Ebay is 60 amp but I'm not sure that rating is correct as Powermaster list the same part number as only 50 amps. Ideally I need 70 to 80 amp, does anybody know if they are available higher than 50 to 60 amps is this small case size ?.

I use the alternators found on Mitsubishi's, they are tiny and very powerful, if you get one from a luxury Mitsubishi it will be 90 amp plus.
Kubota are also tiny but not very high amps.

Go to an alternator repair shop and see what they have on the shelf. They can also upgrade to higher output internals. If mounting/placement is an issue, alternators will work rotating in either direction. Maybe attach down low on the frame?

Since a variety of readers bring different levels of experience and understanding to these threads perhaps some elaboration is needed.

Since most engines are attached to the frame through flexible mounts, just mounting an alternator to the (comparatively) non-moving frame will create a belt tensioning problem. The advantage of the units pictured earlier is the alternator moves with the engine. With a frame mounted alternator and a moving engine you'd need a somewhat complicated belt tensioning system, likely defeated by the limited space issue that started this discussion.

The primary reason the tractor sourcing came into play is the drive pulley being of a V belt configuration. Most (if not all) contemporary automobile configurations have a "flat" belt style pulley. Fine if that works with the rest of your system, not if you require a V belt. Of course you could get an alternator one place, and a pulley elsewhere.

If you are handy enough, and it seems some people here surely are... Run it off the crank at the rear like they do with some dry sump oil pumps.
