Anyone done a 572 GM Crate Motor in a '32 Hiboy yet?

I'd like to start build on a '32 all steel hiboy in the near future and have been tossing ideas of my combo ...

Right now, I'm leaning to a Gloss Black '32 Hiboy with Red Leather interior ... along with a 9", 700-4R, and a Big Block ...

I'd love to go with a GM 572 ...

Anyone on here seen or done this combo before?

I've seen several big block hiboys ... so I would assume this is very doable ...

I've developed a love for hotrods for some time now and would love to have a golden oldie ... I currently own a '99 C5 Corvette, a '95 Camaro with a 383 LT1, and a '68 Camaro with a Procharged 383 ...

The 700R4 won't handle a 572. You will need a pretty good firewall relief for the distributor and if you run a TH400 the tunnel will have to be enlarged. All in all everything up front will be a tight fit.

If you really want the OD then I would recommend a built TH400 and Gear Vendors OD unit.

Welcome to CHR... There is a few black with red deuces here on the site, and a gadzillion or two of them on the road. As for the 572, it's been done, seen a few of them.... All are very front heavy and won't hook up.... If you're going to spend all that money, why not go aluminum block, heads, and intake and have a car that will handle?

I've got 3 small block rides and a couple that handle great ... so I was thinking my next toy should be a big block ... and I've always loved the look of the '32 highboy ... this just sounded like a great fit for my taste ...

A cool cruiser with lots of straight line, tire blowin' fun ...

If I don't go with a 572 ... I would probably do an LS7 ...

If anyone has links or pictures of a 572 in a hiboy ... I'd love to see them ...

Distributor in the front. Ford in a ford. C6 tranny Blocks are readily available. Plenty of inf on 460ford.com . I am putting 1 in a 5 window project I am building. And the cost is preety close to a BBC

I'm truly a chevy guy at heart but I do love the '32 hiboy looks ...

But I do see where a ford motor would def. make for an easier swap ...

I guess I'll have to get a sticker saying ... "Ford Tuff with Chevy Stuff"

I am a 32 Ford roadster owner ... and have been for over 30 years ( Yes, mine is a Henry built car ) ... The above photo was taken in Los Angles at the LA Roadster show 2007. I live not too far from you ( South Carolina )

My car was equipped with a BBC 427 with aluminm heads back in the late 60's and early 70's.

This is how it looked at the NSRA Nationals in 1973 ... :D with the 427/400 Turbo.

If you really want a Big Block ... I suggest you build the frame with the front cross member moved 2 inches forward.

That will give you a good bit more room and will actually help the ride. Original 1932 Ford wheelbase is 106.5 inches stock but with moving the axle forward 2 inches and the rear back 1/2 inch ( to center the tires in the wheel well ) ... you will be at 109 :) Rootlieb can make a 2 inch longer hood ... no problem ... if you want a hood.

If you trim out the firewall ... and recess it one inch ... that helps also.

A BBC with Aluminum heads, aluminum intake, aluminum water pump and a small gear reduction starter is ONLY about 70 pounds heavier than a all iron SBC.

Thanks a ton ... I have a frame maker only a few miles down the street from me and he does early rods all the time ... I should be able to have him tackle this frame lengthing and the recessing of the firewall ...

I would buy the largest Z series Walker radiator Vernon makes for the 32 ... sit it on the front cross member ... Have the BBC with the water pump and a large fan mounted ... and then sit the engine/fan about one inch off the Walker. Install the engine and transmission mounts and then ... Trim the firewall out and then build it back ... with about 3/4 to 1 inch clearance between the firewall and the rear of the BBC.

Back when my 32 was BBC powered ... :rolleyes: The engine and the transmission was mounted about a inch and a half higher than most SBC installations. It also had the firewall set back ( recessed almost 3 inches )

With the original fenders ... stock wheel base mandated that the front crossmember could NOT be moved ... so the firewall suffered ... and so did foot room. The Turbo 400 ... along with the higher engine/transmission mounting ... made the floor hump uncomfortable for long hauls.

I am still using a 400 Turbo ... ( the car has not been redone since the late 70's and early 80's ) ... but with the SBC and a raised water pump riser ... I do not have to have the engine mounted as high. Mine actually sits about 1/2 to one inch lower than the typical 32 SBC installation. My floor is almost flat.

I like to use a belt driven mechanical fan ... ( I hate electric fans ... :D ) ... and I use the clutch type SO I needed to recess the Firewall one inch to help with the clutch fan and the HEI ...

Hi Tim,
I am currently building a Brookville 1930 Model A roadster with a LS6 454. It is a tight fit with NO extension of the frame. I used a Bitchin BB firewall, lowered the motor mounts, and still ran into firewall issues trying to use a HEI unit. I had to use a MSD pro billet distributor (much smaller in size) and this kept me from having to knotch the BB Bitchin firewall. If this roller motor is not enough I plan on putting a 871 blower on it. Like others have said I doubt if it will ever hook up even running my Hoosier Pro street radials. It might be fun with the 572 for sure.
