I apologize for not getting the information I said I would, work has been really ugly this week. That's my only excuse, I will try tomorrow.

It doesn't . . . but is that the kind of endorsement you want?Quote:
it doesnt look bad at all
That's as honest as I can get.
i pulled the firewall and it looks like i may cut....gotta do it right
Hooray for you. :) :) It's like giving birth..........you won't remember the pain when it's all over, and you will have something to be proud of. Your Deuce is going to be spectacular anyway, this just makes it a little bit more perfect.
Don
I vote do it right. Cut the firewall.
If you wait until tomorrow, I can give you my opinion on how much room you need. I will measure mine and tell you what my dimension is. On my car the idler pulley is the culprit, I'm assuming that is the real problem for you also.
Ken
ok, this is a rollercoaster im on......i measured every possible part in the way or near the 1.5 inch move......
1 cross member will hit shifter on 4 spd
2 trans will have to be shaven down on some of the casting
3 cut the fire wall
4 steering box will have to be in a wacked angle
5 altinator will come real close to steering box
6 lakester pipes will be only 1/2 from body on pass side
shifter will be that much closer to seat .
if i move the radiator 1.25 in forward i can eliminate all this issues ....
sorry if im driving you guys crazy but think what im goin thru....
Movin' that front crossmember forward lookin' any better yet?
You asked for honest opinions (I thought that's what we've been doing all along)...............mounting the rad forward makes it look like somebody screwed up mounting the front axle. And you can try explaining it away to everyone who sees it, but they'll walk away thinking you did something wrong.
If it was easy everybody would be doin' it.:D
get rid of the blower! I have one and now I wish I never bothered with it. I cant run a original hood is what I dont like about it the most.
dont get me wrong i know their is honesty , imjust saying 1 in may not be so bad. id say moving cross member is totally out of question . but i will see what tommarow night brings , new experience happens every day ....
We know where you are coming from, and understand how upsetting these little setbacks can be. We have all wrestled with them. The comment I made earlier about it only being metal with the ability to be moved around to get the desired end result is really what it boils down to.
Maybe it would be advantageous to have a good rod fabricating shop in your area move that front crossmember and related parts forward. There is no shame in using people who do this kind of work on a daily basis. Perhaps they can suggest another alternative, like putting a couple of inches into the front frame rails, moving everything forward that amount. Steel can be cut and welded and you never know they were in there, if done right.
I think it was Bob who suggested that '32's lend themselves to a longer wheelbase anyway, and he is right. It would make that substantial engine look like it belonged in there.
We're on your side bud.:) :)
Don
I think Don is right, you might want to consider a little stretch. My truck has a 3' stretched and I liked it so much I stretched my Dearborn 5". I got tired of fighting the no room problem. Just a thought.
Ken
A couple of thoughts.
How is the clearance for the top of the front carb to your future hood? It looks tight in the photos, or maybe your planning a scoop or something else?
Take a long straight edge or masking tape and place it on top of the radiator shell and all the way back on the cowl until it touches the base of the windshield. The result will be the side profile you will have after you hood is installed. I realize you more concerned right now about the radiator/fan/firewall fit but take a look at the side profile before you get too far along.
If your like me, its the little things that drive you crazy and its better to bite the bullet now than be sorry later. On my car I ended up with a two inch extended three piece Hagen hood and sides to get the proper consistant smooth drop starting at the cowl. Just an opinion.
John- good thought, that was real important to me I didn't want to cut my hood. I lowered my motor until it all fit.
Godspeed32 - Is this a concern of yours?
If you don't want to move the front cross member or cut the firewall, then why not move the radiator and fan to underneath the car or into the trunk. Others have done it and it seems to work well if set up properly. Don't forget to louver the trunk lid.:D
That way you can keep your grill where it is, and use a standard hood (assuming that the blower/carb combo won't require a hood modification. Still keeps the traditional 32 roadster look, even though a bit more radical.
You're going to put a HOOD over that beautiful engine ?????
That's like scoring a date with Jessica Simpson and making her put a bag over her head so no one knows who you are out with.
I can guarantee you, in either scenario I would have a neon sign pointing right at me saying "HEY, CHECK THIS OUT !!!!!!!!!!!!" :D :D

guys i want to thank you for drillin me .....i moved the engine and i got everything perfect!!!! :D
Don't keep us in suspense. What did you do exactly? :) :)
Don
well i got home yesterday and hooked up the engine lift and cut the motor mounts off the frame and then i moved the engine back 1.25 in . then lowered it a 1/4 in then tok the trans mount and flipped it so the trans didnt hit cross member , made new slotted holes on that and everything bolted up. nicely. now the radiator sits on the cross member where it belongs . tonight ill fit the firewall and cut the floor for the tunnel and shifter location
Cool, congratulations. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) Looks good.
Don
Wow! Nice job. Engine, fan, and radiator looks like all one piece.:D
BTW, you aren't planning on running a hood on that beautiful engine, are you????:toocool: :toocool:
Sometimes the thoughts of doing something are worse than the actual work itself. We all hate to tear something apart and start over, but if we don't do it we live with the problem forever, or until we get fed up and finally do something about it.
You made a very wise decision, now you can move onto other things and not have to keep wondering about this one. That's building a car, knock down one problem at a time and tackle the next one. I think this thread will be an important lesson for others who run into problems like this in the future, and you digging in and just doing it will set a good example. :)
Don
Well far as a hood im gonna run a 3 piece hood that will be removable , when funds are saved up again...
i think im gonna name this car tight fit !! got alot of obstickles to tackle , but anything that gets in my way ill warn you ""ill cut"" ..lol. anyway made some good progress last night till the neighbor walked up the driveway and said im makin too much noise late at night.....needless to say i wasnt done fitting stuff so i packed it in for the night , but stay tuned im off this week from work so ill hopefully have the frame mocked up complete , and off to powder coat the following monday .....
That's what I enjoy about country living, never really liked closeness. nearest neighbor is 50 yards away and he works nights at HD so he is never home. The other neighbor built a new house and moved leaving the old house as a for sale by owner, which so far hasn't. All other neighbors are too far away to be concerned with anything short of an explosion. :D
You did the right thing, me on the other hand, after kindly explaining the problems I had been having with the build, might have suggested to your neighbor that having a wrenched shoved up the old wahoo was not an impossibility.
yeah well my neighbor looked a little nervous comming into my garage after he looked at me with my angry look on my face .....but hey it was late and i was wrong so ill keep the noise down after 9:30 at night .
Fortunately, at my last house we had super neighbors. They tolerated my garage noisemaking at night, and I tolerated their pool parties and loud friends who stayed late into the night. It was just understood that we all offended each other from time to time and that was part of living with neighbors.
But I have had homes where they were not so understanding. Had some who called the cops on us at any little code we broke, and Cape Coral has more codes than Morse. However, that is a double edged sword, because as soon as they would screw up, the cops were at their door too. I never liked to be that way, but usually a few of those visits and they got the message that I was not going to screw around.
Don
got alot of good stuff done today ill post pics soon ... im so glad i moved the motor back dispite the fact of all the extra work but now it is all correct .
my goal is to get the frame compltely mocked upthis week, because saturday next week the frame is off to powdercoat . hopefully i dont forget anything once you powdercoat that is it...
Glad you did too.............you'll be happier in the long run too.Quote:

car is going black with red leather interior and chrome....
Yup, that's the worst part about powdercoated frames, something always gets forgotten or has to be modified.... Hurrying to get it off to the powdercoat shop just increases the odds of it happening....Good luck.
Yep, there is always something ! My suggestion is to completely finish the car start it, drive it for a couple hundred miles, then blow it apart and chrome and paint it. Then be real careful when you put it back together. Just a suggestion from someone who has forgotten something or changed something on a build. :3dSMILE:
Power coating your frame might be a bad idea on a hiboy. I hear the body and frame come out a little bit different and there are lots of different blacks. I have no experience on this just from what I read. Im sure some people can enlighten you on this.
i have a real good paint supply house near me , and my powdercoater as well , his high gloss black powdercoat will be matched with the color gun used by good paint stores . i was thinking that but then i reassured the paint and powdercoat will match very well,
here is a few pics of what i got done, i even had my lil helper sanding some body braces before paint ....at 6 years old she can sand like no other ;)
got the clutch pedal assemble hooked up with my z bar i modified to fit the car . also got the shifter fitted . the other picture is my powdercoated bellhousing and oil pan ....looks pretty sweet:cool:
Hey, aren't there child labor laws against this sort of thing? :D Looks like she knows her stuff and is doing a good job. You might be having another hot rodder coming up there. :)
You have really put some very nice parts and work in this car. It just screams hot rod, from the blower motor to the louvered deck lid. The finished car is going to be fantastic.
Don
thanks don , i appreciate the kind words . i keep the garage door down so i dont get into trouble for having young cheap labor ....i feed her some cheese sticks and some juice boxes and she is ready for work...
I'd just paint the frame with the same black you're using for the body. The color will match dead-on, and unless you're planning on driving down a gravel road 80 mph daily, there's no real need for powdercoating IMO. Plus if it ever DOES get a few little chips, you can touch 'em up easily with color that is a perfect match. I've been driving the wheels off of my car and the painted frame has yet to get a single chip, and wipes off as easy as the body. That shifter looks cool as heck btw... I wish my car had 3 pedals!
