turn signal switch

At some point I need to get a turn signal switch for Hiboy.

I would prefer a vintage one. I have yet to see a new one that I like. THey either look bulky / ugly to me, or they look too modern (billet). I looked at some old ones, a few of which I liked, but I am concerned about them not working.


What are some of the things to look out for?

Can an old switch be repaired or restored?

If the switch works but is 6 volt, how can I use it on 12 volt system?

PS: Does anyone know what year the switch pictured below is from? I like it.

The one you are showing looks to be in good condition and I doubt that it needs repaired, but I think it could be done.
To use it on a 12 volt system you would need to change the bulb under the green lens unless it is a neon bulb. You would also have to change the flasher unit to 12 volts. Other than that you shouldn't have a problem as long as you get someone to wire it who knows what they're doing.

Some British sports cars used a nifty little switch that poked out under the dash, and used a cancelling setup that could be hidden up under the dash or even on the steering box. Try the Euro auto wreckers.
The ones like your pics are sometimes found on highway trucks, but they don't always have the cancelling feature.

I use a 50/60's VW beetle turn switch. They are really small and neat. Everythings made of aluminium so they polish up nice. You can just about see it on this photo.

And --if you want it to cancel you can buy an adjustable timer at Radio Shack that you can set for 10 or 15 seconds---the signal light being turned on starts the timer.

Cool... But none of you guys have told me what year /model this switch comes from? It looks very 30's (art deco)... Is it that old? I need to know por favor...

Maybe you could send it to the Smithsonian and have it carbon dated.....

Doesn't really matter when it was made, if it doesn't work, replace it....
