This may seem like a dumb question, but anyone have a bright suggestion for where in a 32 roadster to keep the registration and proof of insurance? I don't have a glove box or door pockets, and have too much junk in my wallet already. I'm thinking of some kind of plastic sleeve up under the seat. Any ideas? I don't really want to use the old wrapped-around-the-column holder, but at least it would be nostalgic.....
Steel tube, magnet epoxied onto the tube, mount on the steel dash cross-bar.
In a baggy in the trunk in the tool box.

I keep mine in a plastic sandwich bag ... sealed up ... and under the seat in the Roadster :D
In my 3W ... I will keep it in the glovebox ...

They used to sell those pouches that wrapped around the steering column and had a clear window to display the papers inside for this purpose. Wonder if they still do?

When I had my seats done I had a pouch put on the back of each one to keep papers and stuff in ;) Of corse if yours are already done that won't help much :HMMM:

When my 1930 Model A roadster is finished I will keep my license and registration rolled up under the seat inside plastic so moisture cannot harm it. My plans are putting it inside an unused condom with the documents all rolled up. I can hardly wait to see the officer's face when I put the requested documents in his hand! Then he can either read them through the condom or remove/unrolled them for better viewing. Hopefully he will have a sense of humor and maybe let me off with a warning. I am not sure how this would be viewed if it was a female policeman who stopped me. Hopefully she would not think I was hitting on her or being suggestive! :) :)
I use a plastic snap apart baseball card holder,,,,and its under the seat,,,,works great,,,in fact the last time we were in the roadster,,,,it was the only thing that stayed dry!:D HRP
If you put your registration under the seat, dont put your pistol and drug stash under the seat.....kinda makes for a tense moment when the officer asks to see your registration......
Like MM64 said, I have pockets made into the back of the seats so I could carry a few assorted items... You know important stuff like paperwork, sunglasses, sun screen, garage door opener Magazines... Those pockets come in quite handy...

How about cutting a small hidden box in the floor under the carpet, good for hiding all kinds of stuff, just a thought
Forgive me for sounding maybe 'ignorant', but don't you guys have a trunk?
Seems that important paper work would then be safely locked away. I keep everything in my trunk - and I mean everything - from road emergency stuff , tool box, battery charger and air compressor to warm clothes, blankets, sunscreen lotion, gloves, flashlight, MAPS, registration papers etc... Plus the occasional folding chair and even sometimes car cover - it all fits in there :3dSMILE: - The rumble seat set - up (minus the seat) makes it easy to FILL the trunk to the top (althougth the deck lid sometimes has trouble sliding in to open up). It's not that I am a rat pack, but rather that I do go on loooong cruises and pretty much always by myself - need to be prepared for any eventuality. As an exemple I drove 8.5 hours pretty much straight the other friday.
Anyways, I guess I am just curious as to why you guys are overlooking the obvious trunk - am I missing something? :confused:
You roadster people are a strange breed:LOL: :LOL: :LOL: and since I assume most of you use the glovebox for things other than it was intended for, I have a suggestion. The military small ammo box, I think, would be ideal for storage of important documents. They don't take up a lot of room and are totally waterproof (great for float trips) and can be easily repainted. :3dSMILE:

The 3W dash is the first Ford to have a cigar lighter also ... look at the center of the dash ... up high near the windshield ...
I know most of your car experiences are with late model cars that have a glove box ... ;) but in the older cars ... they did not have glove boxes ..
T buckets don't have trunks either. I like the pocket idea, though.

When you get ALL that stuff in the trunk ... and have to get the registration papers out ... it is under all that stuff ... :) and being a man ... digging in the trunk for the papres makes a Policeman a little nervous ... he is concerned you might come up with a pistol. Maybe a female driver would not upset them as much.Quote:

Deuce, do you know offhand if the three window dash is a bolt-in to the five window?
Reason I ask is when I was in high school, a guy a year ahead of me had a very nice five window and I heard that he was running a three window dash.
The only pic I have of it has the steering wheel blocking the view of the dashes right side.
I always thought that perhaps the three window dash made more room for instruments, but maybe it was for the glove box.

This 5 window dash ... is held on by 7 screws ( factory set up ) ... and the screws go thru the dash into the body ...

The 3W dash has a few bolts that hold it to the upper lip of the dash rail on the body and are concealed by the windshield frame ... and has a bolt on each side on the lower rail of the dash where the dash is close the the body ... just about where the door latch is ( see photo )

filled the glove box and the cigar hole and after market SW gauges installed. :)

If . . . a guy wanted to, looks like he could knock out a 1/4" aluminum glove box lid and paint it to match the dash.
With appropriate hinges and ledges inside . . . as well as the box proper.
Not sure if I'd do it, just thinking out loud.
I got room though.
Hinge it at the top and drive everyone crazy....:LOL:
Brookville sells the repro glove box doors and the ash tray is made in repro also ... if you wanted to take the easier way out ... :D

Anyhoo, I want to put a cowl vent in the 31 A roadster - Brookville body, so no probs with a cowl gas tank.
The 32 cowl vent is 5" x 14" I believe.
Seems like some older mini pickups have a similar sized cowl vent, but I'm not completely sure.
Suggestions anyone?

Its been my experience that, as some noted, it isn't a good idea to be reaching into the glove box, or even worse getting out and heading for the trunk, when the trooper is approaching. I have found that having your license, registration, and insurance card in hand, along with a good attitude, can keep you out of trouble. It must work because I am going on 37 years now without a ticket, and I definitely don't drive that legally!
Returning to the original question posed, '32 roadsters don't have a glove box and I don't wish to add one. So, answering my own initial question I have for now decided to use a plastic CD sleeve (not a hard case) which I stuck up under the seat between the spring and padding. You can reach under the front of the seat and have it out in seconds. We'll see how well it works the next time that nearly-empty freeway in front of my house is too enticing, and smokey is hiding waiting for the ricers again.
Thanks for all the great responses. The new 32 hit the road for the first time August 5 and picked up its first trophy with 52 miles on the odometer. To make the day even more memorable I got to pose with it and my very first car, a '30 roadster I built in 1965, which also showed up at the same event. A fun day for sure.
Ok I'm going to go out on a limb here and add a couple comments

Yeah, though so.....It's pretty much the same if you ride a bike, very seldom do you hand over the keys. Know where the registration for my Harley is?. In my billfold along with the insurance card and my license. One stop shopping if I need to show them to that nice police officer.
I guess there are some advantages to living in England (not many i know) but if i get stopped by a dibble who wants to see my documents. I have to produce them at any Police Station within 24hrs, hence i don't carry any of them.
This routine makes for such a laid back pleasant way of living, i just can't imagine worrying about reaching into a glovebox and getting a gun pointing at you.
Don't get me wrong i love the USA but things that can happen out there....wow! very scary!:eek:
It has nothing to do with anyone else driving the car (like that's gonna happen). With both a '32 roadster and a Harley, that would be two 8 1/2 X 11 registration papers folded up in my wallet along with all the other junk in there. As stated up front I didn't consider that a good option. The Harley papers are in a baggy in a saddle bag; the '32s are now up under the seat. Problem solved.Quote:

I guess your right, at one time I had 2 bikes and kept both registrations in my billfold without any problems (but 3 would have been a problem).
As far as being married, that is not a problem, wife (who thank god is very supportive) prefers to do the passenger thing in most of "my" cars. Of course then there are "her" cars (I try to make sure she has at least 2 of her own).

Thanks. The car is a driver, but getting a trophy (my first since 1983) on its first outing was a bonus. Having wanted a '32 roadster for some 41 years its just nice to finally be able to "live the dream". And its a 327 4-speed so is very mid-sixties. I picked it up from SoCal 9/05 as a roller and had it going by 8/06 after fixing much of what they did - a long story - and substantial motor/trans problems. This winter will see the body work and upholstery finished I hope.
