I bought a 23 T with a 327 in it. When I first crank it up, it leaks oil from around the top of the oil filter. It only does it when it's cold. It has an S8A STP filter on it. Do you think it could be the wrong filter?

id put a new one on there anway and be sure to get any old seal that may be left up in there out. how much oil pressuer do you have? ive had them blow the oil filter clear off of the motor because of to much pressuer on start-up. :confused:Quote:

I just checked again. The oil is coming from between the oil filter and the outside lip where it mounts. The filter isn't leaking. Does the bracket that the filter screws on have a gasket or something? Looks like a lip around the outside where the filter screws on. Is this bracket bolted on?
Depending on the age of the 327, it may have an aftermarket adapter on there that replaced the old style canister filter. Best thing to do is pull the filter off there and take a look. Remeber when installing a filter that you don't want to over tighten it. Just snug against the gastket then about 1/4 turn more. Don't use a filter wrench to tighten it. Probably not a bad idea to change the oil and filter on a rig you just got anyway to set a time frame for changes in the future.

I think you're right. I got some info from another board it probably has an adapter and it's leaking around it. I will pull it off tomorrow and see.
Stu Cool is right! The adapter is made of aluminum about 3/4" thick. It uses the same gasket as the old cannister type did. Thats where it might be leaking. You may have to take the adapter off and take a ice pick to remove the old gasket, its like a 1/8"x 4" dia. "O" ring. They usally get hard and brittle and start leaking. Anyway it may be hard to get without buying the old filter type 'cause they come with a new gasket. :HMMM:
Been there, Good Luck.

Thanks Guys
I got it fixed. The adapter takes the same gasket that the old canister oil filter used.
I have an older 1963 327 engine and I took the old filter canister off and got a $10.00 adaptor to use a regular chevy spin on you can get one for a popular ford spin on for the same price. But like you did the old filter washer did the job and I will remember that tidbit. Ed ke6bnlQuote:
