355 stated smoking

Hi all, I thought I would run this by some of you and see what you think. A few weeks ago I changed the heads on my 355 sb with a set of cast 920's that had 202 valves. This thing worked great for about 200 miles and last weekend wile out on a tour it started to smell and bit fumie. It was dark at this time. The next morning I ran it out of the shop and noticed the left exhaust smoking the blues. I have not done a compression test yet, but will in the morning. The thing that bugs me is I was driving the car very easy at the time (I had the wife with me). The motor is nothing special. It has 30 over flat tops, 268H comp cam, stock rockers and comp springs. Total miles on the motor is around 15000. Anything other that a compression test to look at to see if it's the rings or valves ?

say with that cam, you said stock rockers. You do mean stock long slot rocker arms dont you? Im picking with that extra lift that cam is kicking up the stock short slot rocker arms are probably hitting the rocker studs and things are bending.

Hey southerner, Your right. I do have long slot arms and I also have screw in studs. Good thinking though.

Streets, I was thinking the same way other than adding snake oil. Guess what. Today I checked comp and everything seemed OK. I did have #5 a bit lower than the rest, but only down to 125 lb. I fired it up and no smoke. I could not take it out because it's raining (it's a 40 coupe and I like to keep it clean) but I will as soon and it clears. My thinking was that maybe the PVC got stuck open, but that should have put oil on both sides. I know for a fact that only the one side was smoking. I will get back to you guys after my test run. I hope it stays smoke free.


One other question I have. With the PCV hooked up and on the right side, I have a vented crome cap on the left side. Should I seal this thing up or leave it ?

I sure did streets. It only gained a few pounds. Today was a nice sunny day so we took the old girl out for a run. No smoke. All I changed was the PCV. What I don't understand is why only the one side smoked, but today it was fine. I even buzzed the thing a few times. Everything was back to normal. To think I almost had the wife into thinking I needed to build a stroker. Thanks guys.
