Well I finally got my small block in my s-15, it seems to be working all right, but I am not sure if I have the valves adjusted correctly. I can't get a definate answer out of anybody about how to set my chromoly full roller rockers, can some one point me in the right direction please? any help would be appreciated, Thanx

I seem to be still running into trouble though, every one tells me to snug down the nut until there is resistane turning the push rod, then crank it down another 1/2 to a 1/4 turn and lock it. When I start the engine back up It idles extremly rough (no its not the cam). I can barely get it to rev over 4000 rpm on the street. I ended up setting it up with the engine running, by backing them off till they start to clack, then tightening them down until the clacking stops, then go an extra 1/2 turn and locking them, it seems to work alot better this way, it revs out and idles way better. Is it ok to set them this way? also the other thing I noticed was when I had the engine off and I rechecked the valve lash, they were really loose, what could that mean ?

Running the engine and setting the rockers the way you did it is not a problem at all. If it weren't for the mess it makes setting them that way, I would do it that way all of the time.
when ur engine breaks down at high revs changing the carb seemed to do nothing...i might be because ur drawing it through the factory pump with ur new electric one...did changing the coil help at all...u might have to change the module as well i found it made a difference at the high revs....

there are quite a few posts around telling you how to set your valves, all websites of cam-manufacturers (my fav is cranecams.com) tell you how to, too. But maybe it's not a problem with your rockers, maybe your lifters are full of oil? I had that problem, the previous owner of my engine (350 stock) "pumped them up" before he put them in. Thought it was the right thing to do. But then i had 4 of my lifters acting as if they were solid, that jolly well rattled my bones. so I took apart every lifter, cleaned it, just coated it in fresh oil and was very careful not to get any (except for lubrication) in the bottom of the lifter (where the spring is). works fine. Couldn't set it at all before, either too littler valve lash (RATTLE) or too much lash (duration too short, so I got no power and no high revs). now: almost perfect (there are other things wrong, but I guess that's settled now). I got talking to one of the pro stock drag racers downtown where we all hand out, he told me to back them off till they rattle, then tighten them up till they stop, tighten it a 1/4 turn, let it settle, another 1/4 and let it settle, then tighten it another 1/4 turn and lock it. It is working alot better now, but I think that jay may be right, it is a fuel problem now, 1st through 2nd its no prob, but at the top end of 2nd it starts to break down, it usually gets to about 4500 rpm or so. if you shift into 3rd and go easy, then punch it to kick it down into 2nd, it goes to 5500 rpm no prob, but not for long. The pump I have its rated for 5.5 - 7psi, it should be enough fo a quadrajet, I hope. I wanna get it running better before syracuse, it would be a long tow home, Hey Jay bring a tow strap buddy, we may need it. lol
